Re: How To Free Up Horeses For Free

one of the best things to do to gain free "power" is to lose excess weight from the car. ditching the back seat, air con system, or really any useless accessories will help acceleration and top speed, the weight to power ratio is 4:1, or four pounds to every one horsepower. the more stuff you can ditch, the more "power" you gain. if its not neccessary, ditch you emissions equipment, air pump, cats, egr, etc. this is a lot of extra weight.

also, performing a few simple mods to your air induction system can help quite a bit. for instance, remove the screens from you maf, this can create as much as 125 extra cfm of air flow, resulting in a few extra ponies. you can also bore out the runners in your air induction, this is just behing the top of the front bumper and in front of the radiator, there is a plastic piece that connects to the maf, and under that plastic piece is your air filters, along with a hodge podge of plastic runners. removing these will release lots of power. see this page: http://www.cardomain.com/id/uwfalcon for some of pictures of what the maf and runners will look like with the mods i mentioned.

If you're really daring and have a steady hand, you may want to try boring out the intake runners with a dremel tool, just bore out the portions of the intake that may block some fuel or air flow. this will cause a better flow rate and better performance.

If you do attempt any of these tips, be very careful. the last thing you want is to take the car to a shop to fix a slip of the hand.

anyway, good luck.

Free mods depend on how many tools to which you have access. For starters, get yourself a two gallon pickle jar and clean it out real good, and cut a slot in the lid.

Ha ha Ha, right!? No joke. Get yourself a pickle jar. Cut the slot, then stuff all your spare change, and any single dollars you have into the pickle jar at the end of each day. THIS IS YOUR CAR FUND, FOR SPEED PARTS ONLY. It worked for me when I was a teenager, and I fixed up my ''77 Camaro well enough for local car shows. http://www.ws6transam.org/gallery/camaro1.jpg

Now, with your car fund firmly established, work on that engine. Tune it up before you do ANYTHING ELSE. Make sure you have new plugs, wires, distributor cap, and rotor. Run a couple of cans of Chevron Techron through the fuel tank to clean out carbon and laquer deposits from the injector pintiles and valve tops. Make sure everything runs fine before you even think about trying to mod it.

First of all, you're only 15. You're not even allowed to drive legally. You have the time... save, save, save. No job? Cut grass, rake leaves, shovel snow, whatever. Make money the old fashioned way. Second, a 200HP V8 rear wheel drive car is more than enough power for a rookie driver. The last thing you need to do wreck the car and injure yourself - I've seen it too many times.

More power always costs money. There are very few free mods that you can perform that produce noticable power on these cars. The BEST thing you can do is to get it running properly.

Um, how does this exactly make his car faster, and how does it fall into the "FREE UP HORSES FOR FREE" thread?? This is a useless piece of advice. Subframe connectors only slow you down in a stock car, because they just add weight when you have a stock suspension, and even more so if you have an old Z28 in desparate need of lower ball joints, new idler arm, struts, and centerlink.

Subframe connectors have their place, and fall in the top five when it comes to suspension modifications. However, on an old Z28 in the hands of a 15 year old, it's better to concentrate on fixing the stock components first, before pouring money into speed parts.

This would be my shopping list in order of importance:
1) Tuneup: Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel injector cleaner, air filters, wiper blades, Rain-X, oil, oil filter, serpentine belts, heater hoses, radiator hoses, radiator flush, and new antifreeze.

2) Brakes. Check pads and change if less than 1/8 inch pad. Replace the brake hoses if they look anything but new. Buy speedbleeders and install in the calipers. Replace the brake fluid while changing all rubber hoses and bleed thoroughly.

3) Suspension: Replace the struts and shocks with KYB. Buy Moog problem solver ball joints, moog idler arm, and replace the center link. Tighten the gear box. Replace sway bar end links with polyurethane equipped end links, and replace the swaybar bushings. Have the car professionally aligned. Instruct them to dial in as much negative camber as possible. They'll only be able to get to zero or -0.5 degrees at most.

4) Flush the transmission fluid, change filter, and adjust the TV detent cable at the throttle body.

5) Adjust the Throttle position sensor for optimum voltage at wide-open throttle.

6) clean EVERYTHING out of the interior of the car that isn't bolted down. If it really needs to be in the car, bolt it down. Vacuum thoroughly, then shampoo it. Let it dry, then vacuum again.

7) Rain-X the windows inside and out. Wax the paint, even it it looks like a bad paint job. Scrub all dirt out of the inner fender lips of each fender.

8) Remove the ground effects from the car, including along the door sill, and scrub & clean the metal. Wire brush off any surface rust, then use a good rust converter on it. Primer over top after a day or so with zinc primer, then have an aerosol can made up of your body color to touch up the panel. Reinstall the GFX.

--- I hope this is a more helpful list. It'll guarantee maximum enjoyment out of your car without breaking the bank.
