How fast are the 1990 GTA`s in the 1/4

I was just wonderin how fast my GTA will be, it`s bone stock, 350 TPI, 3.27 9 bolt ( yes they do exisit my 1990 GTA has one I checked) hard top, loaded. I put the down payment on her yesturday and took her for a test drive and I only put her 1/4 to the floor and WOW it`s got some ***** I can tell ya, BUT my driver right now is a 81 Olds cutlass with a 3.8 it REALLY slo, so the GTA probly feels faster then it really is lol.

Oh and how would it go against a 90 5L stang, would it beat one???, I know the GTA`s are the heavest 3rd gen.

I would say that you could pull of a mid 14 no problem, my stock 350 Iroc did a 14.6 with a muffler, Accel Coil, and 2.73 gears.

Early 90's cobras will give you a run for your money, others, you should have no issue with. 1994-1995 with the 5.0 will give you a run for your money. 1996-2000 will give you a run for your money, and the cobra will probably take you.

Oh for sure she`s going to the track, I can`t wait.... I saw a 87 IROC 350 TPI do 14.9 - 15.1, But he was driving her so carefully, never reved it up to launch her or nothing,

Oh forgot to say it has a shift kit though and I`m putting a Vortex muffler on her and it has a K&N filter.

My guess if it is well tuned high 14's. With a good launch a mid 14 is possible.

90 is a speed density car, with the 350 and 2.0 60fts you should get mid 14s or so depending on tune.

My 87 LB9 was running a 14.6 before I pulled the 305. I had 40 series flowmaster, free ram air, a few other free mods, drag radials, good tail wind, good track prep. That was here in Baytown (Houston Raceway), people usually run better here do to the elevation.

Optioned up with power seats and such those GTAs get to be a big bag of potatoes to haul down the track. Same car as a Formula or Trans Am- just more gee-gaws loaded into them, adding to the weight. I had an 88 like that and it wouldn't crack a 14 unless conditions were ideal.

Re: How fast are the 1990 GTA`s in the 1/4

I remember an old ad from 1988 that has the formula 305, GTA, and Iroc 350 all in one article. The GTA did the quarter in 15.3 because it weighs the most of the three cars. It has softer suspension than the Iroc also. They did a servey and found most white collar workers bought GTA's and blue collar bought IROC's. Pretty cool old article. The 5 speed TPI 305 Formula was as fast as the 350 IROC in the quater at 14.8

I have a hard time believing a 305 vs 350 would be stock in the 1/4. My 1991 article of 1LE vs 1LE (305 vs 350) had a 0.6 slower time in the quarter with the 305.

I believe the T5 305 TPIs had a slighty more aggressive cam then the conventional 305 TPI which put it a little closer to the 350. Plus, with it being a stick shift as well as having a 3.42 gear in the rear probably helped as well so I could see it hanging right alongside a 350TPI.

Not too mention it was a Formie 305 and the Formies weighed in less then the GTA's (and probably) the IROCs as well.

Everyone forgets that the 5spd 305s had the big cam. They ran like 350s, which is why mine runs strong. See sig for times.

^Yes indeed. 5spd 305's were pretty much dead-even with auto 350's. Sorry.. but the whole "get a 350" saying goes out the window now, doesn't it?
