How does one go about locating a vacuum leak?

My engine sounds like Im running a blower or gear drive or something leading me to believe I have a vaccum leak but have no idea of how to go about finding one. Any Suggestions?

With the car idling, spray carb cleaner or WD40 at all your vacuum hoses. When the idle changes, you found your leak. Don't forget your base gaskets and intake gaskets.

and dont forget that stuff is VERY flammable. had that hapen to me at the shop one time. so keep a bucket of water nearby or a hose or something. spray in small areas at a time to help locate the leak and wait a few sec. s after spraying ea. area to pay att. to the idle speed. it is sometimes only suttle change.

Thanks guys but just out of curiosity what makes the idle change when you spray carb cleaner on the vacuum lines?

The idle changes because there is now an equal amount of fuel going in with the extra air. More Fuel + More Air = Higher RPM
I've heard that a propane bottle also work, unlit and the small hand held size.

I'd rather use Brake cleaner because WD-40 can leave an oily mess.

Actually I heard that propane is a good option too. You use a torch and open the valve on the suspected site. I vote for brake cleaner and to confirm it, use propane. I have used ignition fluid in a pinch but the car must be in an open area and you have to squirt a little of it at the suspected site.

That's a good way to suffocate in a hurry! Suck in some burnt up Brakleen and you CANNOT breathe. We had some new dumba$$ in our shop do that a month ago and we had to evacuate the shop for a half hour.

Use carb cleaner

what the hell kind of brake cleaner do you use? I use thtat stuff all day long and it doenst give me or any of my neighbors a problem much less the whole shop. It is horrible for you to breeth in but as long as your not in a confined area you'll be fine.

also, the rpm will CHANGE, not nec. raise or stumble. it depends on the stuff your spraying. parts/brake cleaner will slow down the rpm and carb cleaner can go either way, depending on how bad the vac. leak is. just listen for the rpm to change.

I never had a problem with brake cleaner. Of course I never do it inside a closed garage. In the winter, I have a hose going outside so I can run the engine all day long with the garage door closed except for a 4 in **** for the hoses to go out thru. This hose is vented far out enough where it won't get sucked in.
