Hot Cam in l98 problems

I've got a problem. I put a hot cam in my 87 l98 and the car drives like a sled.
I set the timing at 8 degrees btdc then moved it to 6 degrees btdc. It seems to be running really rich.
Any suggestions?

What have you done with your engine to work with a Hot-cam? Head work? TPI upgrades? etc....

Just throwing a hot-cam in a L98 isn't going to net you alot. You'll lose alot of low end, and the intake and heads can't support the high rpm flow that the hot-cam likes. Not only that, the stock computer will throw a fit when it sees the hot-cam.

MAF L98 cams have about 207/213 duration @ .050", and just .415"/.431" lift on a 117* LSA. SD L98' cams have a little less duration and lift, but a 112* LSA.

The hot cam is 218/228 duration @ .050", .492"/.492" (assuming 1.5 rr's, not 1.6), and has a 112* LSA.

The hot cam is not the right choice for a stock L98. You shouldn't really exceed 210 duration @ .050" if you don't have the head and intake flow required to utilize that cam.

Re: Hot Cam in l98 problems

Your only way to get it to run decent is to get a EPROM to make it work. Try www.fasterproms.com as they have done good work for me. You will need to tell them your mods and they will burn you a chip that will get it going for now. In the meantime, if you decide to, and I recommend it, look into getting your heads ported, intakes and headers. The reburn by fasterproms later on is about $150, IIRC.
