Question hooker longtubes and spark plugs?

How do you get the number 7 spark plug boot on the plug? I put the headers on the engine while it is on the stand and I can't get a plug wire on the plug, and this is with short header plugs, there is about an 1/8 inch between the electrode of the plug and the header tube when installed. Is there a clearance problem with these headers or is this the nature of the beast.? They are hooker supercomp longtubes by the way.

Are you using angle plug heads? I have Super Comps with straight plugs and once I switched to Accel shorty header plugs and cut down a plug socket all my probs went away. (I think that accel's are a little shorter than some other brands) I have to use a 3/4" box wrench on my socket for every plug except #7 which I have to use a stubby ratchet and short ext. If your's is that close how do you tighten it? I would need more than 1/8" to get my socket on the plug so I guess I have more room than that. I do kind of have to roll the boot up over the plug cause its tight but once its on it doesn't touch the tube. I was hoping that if I switch to angle plug heads later that it would get easier and I could use reg. plugs. Sorry if I wasn't any help. Good luck -- Joey

I'm currently using Accel header plugs and it is still that close. I can't even get the plug boot to start over the electrode of the plug. Like I said just the electrode is 1/8 inch away from the header tube, no boot on it or anything. I did notice that the driver side collector points up and in quite noticalby, I don't know if this is correct or not. The header flange on that side was also bowed out about 3/8 inch from the head with the front header bolt in. It looks like it might be time to call Hooker and Summit to return the headers, cause I can't see how I could run these. Thanks for the help though, nobody knows all the answers but other people might have the idea I'm looking for.

I was just putting my plugs back in and checked there is about 5/8" between the plug and tube on #7, 1/4" with boot on. Also, the collector on the bottom is nearly level with the gound. I didn't have any probs with fit, my SCs were the best fitting headers I've ever put in. You must have gotten a set that was jigged incorrectly or somethin'. I would definately call hooker cuz as much as these puppies cost you shouldn't have those probs. You gotta put your wires on!?! hope that helps. Joey

A-men to that, for $580 they should do alot of things and fit right is one of them. Thanks for all the info on your clearances and collector location.

Hey Joey, are you running AFR heads? I am and I just looked on mine and it looks like the spark plug sits out about 1/2 to 3/4 inch from the stock head location. I'm talking about the spark plug pocket in the head. They are the straight plug version, 195cc competion version if any of that info helps?!

Sorry Tony, I don't have AFR's so I couldn't tell you. Right now I'm just running GM straight plug castings. It would suprise me if they are that different but hey I've been suprised before. It would seem as though they would have lots of header clearance probs if they are. I've seen that several guys on this board have AFR's maybe someone has some straight plugs and can give you some better info.
