Low tranny fluid......dirty tranny filter causing a loss in line pressure......an old high-mileage tranny......those are the first things that come to mind.

Change the tranny filter and have the transmission flushed.

well, if its 150,000 then , if its not already had one, is prob time for a major tune up i also have an 86, it at the 110,000 mark. if u want ur power back u might have 2 buy a rebuild kit cost around 600+ depending on what u get. if its at 50,000 you'll just want a standard tune-up if i where u i'd get in contact w/ previous owner and ask him about the mileage also... ask if its ever had a trans service done if its around 50,000 do it soon cause if u wait to long doin the service might be bad 4 the transmission. well hope any of this helped. feel free 2 ask more questions if u wish.

You can buy an entire tranny for that! Maybe that's it, just seems really high. And the next question: Do you know how to rebuild an automatic? I've heard they're pretty complex if you don't know what you're doing.

You might want to look into a power flush and fluid change, and I've had real good luck with an additive called "Lucas" trans reconditioner.
I'd try these before yanking it...

They are WAY complex. If you've never done it, I don't recommend you trying it without someone there to walk you through it.

But yeah, sounds like a lack of line pressure to me.
