Help, noobie needs help with replacein a engine
I am looking to buy a new engine for my 83 berlinetta, it has a 305ci and im looking to buy a very nice 350 that a friend is getting built for me cheap. I was wondering about how much cost comes with replaceing a engine, i.e. replacing gauge detectors and ect... please help if you can, also what cost come in from changeing from a 4 speed auto to a 5 speed manuel? thanks for you time
Re: Help, noobie needs help with replacein a engine
the gauge sending units will swap over from the 305 to the 350.
a T-5 5 speed tranny wont hold up behind a 350,thats why there were NO 350 IROC's or Z28's made.
as far as cost goes, expect to spend a couple hundred dollars to keep it in the ball park. its an older car, things are going to break, hoses will need to be replaced, etc etc.
have fun

The t5 has been known to hold up behind a 350 it all depends on how lucky you are and how you drive it. If you go real easy and have a t5 that is in great shape to start with you should get a couple years out of it the 6spd t56 or an aftermarket transmission is a much better idea however.
Re: Help, noobie needs help with replacein a engine
agreed...the T5 isn't worth the risk. cause eventually it will brake...unless you granny drive it around. and what is the point of that when you have a new 350 under the hood?
either stick with the auto for a while, upgrade the torque converter and maybe have a mild rebuild done, or spluge on the T56 from a late model fbody. they are designed to handle 450+ pounds of torque! and with a killer double overdrive you'll be able to run 373 or 410 gears and still maintain good highway milage. i know with my 99z six speed, 85mph is 2000 rpms! hard to beat

If you believe he is stuffing a 350 in it to get groceries and will not beat on it, I have a bridge to sell you. T5 will not last long behind that.
Your options are to get a mind rebuild on the A4 with a good TC and leave it at that or go with a T56. Since you are a newbie, here is what I recommend. Get a used higher stall TC and leave it at that. That way, you get the car running perfectly before you mess with the T56. Nothing sucks more than having to diagnose a problem on both sides of the firewall at the same time. Yes, Been there, done that, hated it. The more things you screw with, the more you might have to diagnose at the same time. Why fight a battle on more than 1 front unless you have to? Run the car for a bit and then see what you want to do once you have got the engine sorted out to your satisfaction.

Thanks guys, looks like Im ganan get the A4 rebuilt for about $400, From what ive heard it will take mild abuse, But this 350 im getting built is a beast, should have atleast 375+hp. I will probaly go pritty easy on it until I can beef up the tranny, I figure staying with the auto will save me lots of money and work. It should last a while with the stock A4 right?
