Help with cam specs for my engine...

Here's what I got...

400 block .040 over
3.75" stroke 6" rod
SRP Pistons for 10.3:1 static compression
Dart Pro 1 230cc 64cc heads 2.08/1.60 valves
Edelbrock Performer RPM intake
Crower Severe Duty Solid Lifters
Comp Pro Magnum Roller Rockers
Comp Stud Girdle

In what rpm range would this set up like to work?
What sort of cam would make it work there?
Can that cam be a small base circle? (What is the normal base circle size, and what size do they make for small bases? Do the cam bearings have to be different)
What else do I need to fill out this engine? Carb choice? Headers?

It is going in a '85 stick shift that is mainly for play.

I always look for flow numbers from the cylinder head to determine the appropriate cam. With the 6" rod, I would recommend a .900" base circle cam.

The imtake volume of your heads will allow the motor to make power upwards of 7000 rpm. The intake will limit the motor to 6500.

Off the top of my head, a cam with 242/248 duration@ .050 with lift in the .550+ range ground on a 110 lsa installed at 108 degrees. If the motor has higher compression than 10.3 which I suspect it does with the 64cc heads, I would step up to something in the range of 248/252 @ .050.

Sounds like a stout engine to start with. I see a problem of the intake ports being smaller than the cyl. head ports. A Pro 1 head has pretty big ports and matches up better to a Vic jr. or Super Victor intake. If you went to one of those single plane intakes, you will lose 20-30lb-ft of tq at the bottom and midrange but you'll make a good 20-50hp more IF....IF you cam the engine to spin into the 6500-7000rpm range. More compression would be nice if you could get away with a thinner head gasket but a solid cam like Comp Cam's 12-678-4 or the 12-679-5 and if you were set on keeping the RPM intake I'd go with a less aggressive cam and focus on a more torque oriented streetable powerband. The smaller 12-677-4 would probably have you shifting around 6000rpm at most and would make big tq down low. Then again it only has .500" of lift and those heads were designed for a much more aggressive cam that lifts well into the .600-.800 range. Goodluck!
