Which heads to go with?

Which heads to go with?

I am wanting some advice on a set of heads for my TPI350 92 Z28. The cam I am going with is Comp Cams Extreme energy 218/224 .495/.502 112 LSA. I am looking to have a strong street/strip car, hopefully in the 12's. The heads I am thinking about are Edelbrock's 60cc centerbolt heads, but they have a small 166cc port volume. Trick Flow's 23 degree heads with 64cc combustion chambers and 195cc intake runners. These heads are very close in price and would like to know peoples opinions on these heads. I would like to go with AFR heads, but they would require some machining to maintain the factory compression ratio. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I used to have TFS heads. Today, I would only have them for a doorstop. The valves wobbled in the entire pass side and I suspect that would have negative effects when you can see clearly the wear on the pushrod guides. My spring on a cylinder snappend and the valve hit the piston.

I would get AFR 195 cc heads bare, put whatever you want on them and be happy

Thanks for the input, I have heard alot of bad things about the Trick Flows. I think I am going to save some more $ and go for the AFR's. I heard that they have dropped their 190's, have you heard this also?

I'm getting AFR 195's here within the next month and a half if all goes well.

That cam you have is exatly what I have minus the 112* LSA. Mine is 110*

I went 13.7 on stock heads,TPI, tranny. I had the gears, convertor, cam, pistons, headers done up at the time. You should have a pretty strong running motor but 12's are gonna be pushing it without major mods to that intake.

Yeah, I know the intake is going to be a barrier. I have a new Accel super ram base intake, SLP runners, ported plenum, and 52mm throttle body waiting to go on when I get the heads. I think the 195 AFR'S are the ones I am going to get. If I get those with 68cc chambers, would you leave it at that, or have them milled to 58 or 64cc's. Thanks

definately get afr 195's.

im doing a rebuild right now on my 350. i got the exact same cam you have, i raised the compression to 10:5:1, put headers, and ported out my l98 heads to the max. after i get the prom burnt, im hoping to hit the 12's. if i had a torque converter with a 2400 stall, i would have gone with a bigger cam though... and since your going with the super ram, i think you should have gone with the 224 / 230, .502 / .510 112 LSA extreme energy cam from comp cams. but it's cool, you'll be moving like a bat out of hell with the cam you got anyway

Thanks for the info, guys. One more thing I need to know. Since my car uses speed density instead of mass air, it will be more irritable about mods. I am unable to burn a chip myself, and am thinking of going with Ed Wright to do this. Is he good with set-ups such as this? Thanks again

64 cc heads on a stock L98 shortblock (9.3 to 1 stock) will be 8.8 or 8.9 to 1 with a good head gasket.

If you have a stock short block you'll want all the compression you can get. A stock shim type head gasket is like 5.x cc's and a good aftermarket felpro gasket is going to be around 9.3 cc's. Add to the fact that aluminum does not reflect heat back into the combustion chamber as well as cast iron and you have very bad compression ratio for n/a. This would be excellent blower compression, however.

edit:I'm running the same cam, good idle with noticeable lope, not sure if it'll meet your and my goals, but hopefully I'll be ready to order heads in a week or two. I'm going with pro-lightning 200/64's and an lt1. It'll be lacking torque for a street driven 350, but i've got plans down the road for a 406, and after that, I'll be able to switch to 76cc heads and have great blower compression.

Unless you go there and have him burn it to your setup, it is a guesswork situation. Mine was burnt to my specs but I took readings, emailed them, they sent me another and the cycle contunues once more till they get it perfect. I can tell the difference between the first "guess" and the final product.

I went to www.fasterproms.com and they did a decent job for me for around $350. Next time I have to go thru the cycle is when I consider major mods like intakes, heads, cam and it will cost me $150.
