heads and a cam
Both heads and Cam can be change in the car. You would need to pull the damper, timing chain cover, radiator and condenser if equipped. The cam can be install straight up, but lining the dots on the Crank and cam sprocket, while on the number 1 piston compression stroke. Buy yourself a new 4-way Cloyes timing chain it come with 0,2,4,6 degree advances. This way you get the cam degreed without using a degree wheel.

Yanking the motor makes the cam and heads install a lot easier, but I don't know if it would actually make it faster. But in saying that I am asumming a person that has done it both ways is doing it. If you have never done it before, who knows which way would be quicker. Having the motor out lets you see everything much clearer.
Personally I would leave the motor in. But I have done it a couple of times both ways. There is also the money factor. If you don't have an engine stand or lift, that will cost money.
It's hard to say, maybe you should just flip a coin and go for it.
