Headlight conversion?

I know this isnt engine related so I feel a bit of guilt, but... I know some of the 3rd gen guys only hang out in this forum so here goes:

I've seen a few cars 82-92 on websites (none in real life) with a Monte Carlo headlight conversion... does anyone have a link or more detailed pictures? I was thinking of giving it a go. Once I get the '84 back on the road and it becomes daily transportation again, I hate driving in the rain at night and I've driving a late 80's Monte at night w/ no problem.

thanks guys!

Re: Headlight conversion?

i know for a fact i've seen this mod done on 3rd gens... Im pretty sure there's a sealed beam larger single light that replaces the two lights that is standard on Camaros.

its like one larger longer flat headlight.

Re: Headlight conversion?

They changed the Monte headlights in like 90 or so from the two sealed beams to a larger single unit. They only had it the new way for a couple of years. I've seen a 3rd gen or two with this swap, but I don't know anyting about it.

Re: Headlight conversion?

The Newer Monte's weren't sealed beams but rather the plastic shell with the bulbs going into the back. They are prone to "hazing" from heat and that makes them dimmer than the 4-light sealed beams on earlier Monte's and F-Bodies.
I have NO problem in the rain, You probably have them set too high which gives you more distance when not raining, but in the rain it will NOT reflect back off of object as well.

You can buy headlight "Aimers" that suction onto the bulb for adjustment or have a shop set them correctly for a minimal fee...

Re: Headlight conversion?

i know they are set a little high but honestly, you're the first person to say you have no problem driving in the rain at night. I've owned the car 3 years and driven other 3rd gens as well, even the Firebirds w/ the flip up lights w/ nothing blocking them from hitting the street have some issues w/ providing adequate lighting. I know the swap i've seen was with a sealed beam, I want to think it was probably a 4x9" light??? maybe a sealed beam light from '90's pickups or something similar. Guess i'll find it sooner or later

Re: Headlight conversion?

I'm surprised at the responses here. The later model headlights are one piece as opposed to the maros two piece design.

Look here, here...nevermind, just look here as well.

Re: Headlight conversion?

Like I said, IT IS A COMPOSITE (Plastic) UNIT with bulbs inserted from the rear. The one in the Monte and the White-flamed Z are original Monte pieces, the ones in the other Z's I'm not familiar with. They look like custom fab jobs.
(Note the hazed housings on the Monte and the white-flamed Z..)
I'm not sure how going from 2 sealed beam glass bulbs to 2 insert bulbs in a plastic housing will improve your night driving...and you can't adjust each bulb individually either???

(Oh, I currently own 3-thidgens: '90 IROC tpi, '86 TA tpi, '86 Camaro coupe Mpi, no trouble with any in rain..)

Re: Headlight conversion?

The 86-86 monte LS lights are definately glass lenses with a plastic back where the bulbs twist in. I hit one from an 87 with with a golf club recently when I cleaned out my basement and it was glass

Re: Headlight conversion?

You could also do what all the forth gen. guy do and replace the lights with aftermarket ones.
