Question Headers/Exhaust

I have a 1991 z28 a4 , 383 stroked tpi, origionally a 350, and a supercharger that doesnt run atm, I was wondering what effect puttin a set of headers & exhaust, replacing my stock manifolds & exhaust would do for my car?

Re: Headers/Exhaust

you definately need a set of headers on that thing. It's moving a lot of air and it all needs a way to get out of the motor. Pick up a set of hooker 2210's and a mufflex ypipe. Considering how restricted it is now, you'll probably pick up 50 hp. and a lot of drivealbility and mileage.

Re: Headers/Exhaust

2210 Hookers and a Mufflex Y pipe is probably the best way to go. I am in the process of installing my Mufflex 4" Y pipe with these headers and I have to hack off my Spohn Driveshaft loop. It's in the way of the y pipe. Looks like I need a simpler bolt in unit.

Longtubes, no cats, and a 3.5 or 4" muffler will help with power all across the powerband. 30-50hp on a blown stroker would be my guess too. Goodluck!

Re: Headers/Exhaust

The sound will come more from the muffler than a y pipe. Stay away from Flowmasters. They sound OK but performance sucks. I'm a big fan of Magnaflow.

Re: Headers/Exhaust

383 and a supercharger, and then getting exhaust? Kinda a backwards way of doing it but I'm sure theres a good reason for it. You should probably also consider a better flowing intake manifold such as a Holly Stealth Ram or at very worst porting the existing baseplate, runners, and plenum.

Re: Headers/Exhaust

Wow...a 383, supercharger and stock exhaust? what happened to cause that? A full exhaust will pay huge benefits for you, probably 50+ hp. A new intake manifold would also help a LOT!

So yes put an exhaust on that, I agree with the hooker headers statements

Re: Headers/Exhaust

Nice looking car, Mike. I went with a 4" in/out Flowmaster 40 series(2 chamber). I have a feeling it will be too loud on the street so I might do cone inserts in the turndown after the muffler.

Re: Headers/Exhaust

NastyTA I hear you say you don't go for the Flowmaster mufflers. On my fourth camaro a 1990 RS, I had FlowPros installed and it sound pretty good and from what I could tell perform real well. Have you had any experience with this brand (FlowPro).

Question Re: Headers/Exhaust

About the headers, my brother installed a pair of jet hot long tube headers on his 94 lt1 z28 and it was a pain in the *** for some reason, will it be the same for a 3rd gen or will they slide right in? and if they are a pain in the *** what would be the difference in getting shorties?

Re: Headers/Exhaust

he has a set of bigger runners, the car was already built as it sits when my dad bought it 5 or so years ago, it didnt get much driving untill recently, question, it sits really low as is right now and i dont think longtubes woudl be the greatest choice considering its his school car and he barely clears the speed bumps now, whats the power difference in shorty's, midlengths and longtubes? theres still alot to be gained if he goes with shortys or mid lengths right

Re: Headers/Exhaust

Yea,even shorty headers are gonna give him 15-20 HP over the stock manifolds.
