Hatch motor
Re: Hatch motor
I replaced mine about 5 or 6 years ago so I'm not positive on the amount I paid. But I think it was around $40 at a junkyard. Which is where I would recommend getting one. Ebay of course is always a good place to look.
Re: Hatch motor
I looked on ebay and there are some motors on there that the guy says are new for $40. Will they work in my car? iansane, what do you mean i need to look out for the plastic motor assembly?

Re: Hatch motor
Man I have a friend who has been trying for like 4 years to fix his power hatch on his 87 IROC, he has replaced every part at least once and some twice. He just recently stated that he has had it and is taking it to a dealer whatever the cost. May be something to considder before laying out a ton o0f cash for parts to do yourself?
Re: Hatch motor
The hatches are actually pretty simple, i tore mine apart because the cargo light back there wouldnt work, so i redid some wiring and tinkered with the motor for fun. There is a plastic railing inside of the metal housing, it tends to disintegrate like the pucks in the headlight motors. Mine disentigrated but the motor still works, never had a problem and its been through a wreck. Check the slide peices first to make sure its not simply stuck. But 550 is ridiculous, look on ebay or junkyards for sure. Also like ppl are saying, never slam those things, they are slow but just press down so the motor grabs and then let it pull the hatch down. Ive literally almost lost my temper on ppl who slam my hatch hehe.
Re: Hatch motor
I got sick of messing w/ the stupid pull-down on my last 2 3rdgens, I just simply converted them over to a non-pulldown setup by getting it adjusted to about the right positioning on the rails for the hatch to close easily but fully with no slamming, then pulling the whole unit out and putting a bolt through the rail to hold it in position properly, then reinstalled w/ the motor disconnected. Problem solved, shuts easily enough and no more worries...
