Different people have different opnions on this. If I were to descreen mine, I would only take off the screen behind the sensor (closest to throttle body). This way, you will still have protection for the oh-so-expensive MAF sensor.
To tell you the truth, I dont really think it is worth it, because the TPI still has great airflow restrictions, mainly stock runers/plenum.

I've always taken off BOTH screens on a 3rd gen MAF. It's not an air straightener like the "honeycomb" screen on a 4th gen MAF. Just there to keep stuff from getting inside and damaging the delicate heated wire that is the heart of the sensor. Never had any negative effects from the multiple times I've done it.

Now if you're talking about truly "gutting" it and grinding out the heat sink fins inside THEN you will get some controversy. I was never a big fan of this procedure becuase it actually affects the sensor's calibration slightly and the heat sink fins are there for a reason- there is heat to be dissipated. Could shorten the sensor's life but I never owned a car long enough with the fins cut out to say for sure about truly long term effects.
