gutting emisions?

what all emissions stuff can i remove to add a few hp and some eng. bay room without throwing the computer off. where i live there isnt any emissions inspections or anything so it can all go but i dont want to have a check engine light because of it. id like to get rid of the air tubes, smog pump, cats?, and anything else that gets in the way but i dont know what all i can do.

any suggestions

what does the fuel evap canister do? and when the smog pump is removed is that big black thingy that the green and white plug go to also scrapped? and whats the best way to eliminate the air lines? just cut and bend them or is there a pipe plug that can be put in place of them?

tell me how you guys did yours.

Thumbs up

For smog pump removal, goto thirdgen.org and look at the technical files on what belt to use and how to run it. YOU MUST REPLACE THE BOLTS YOU TAKE OUT OF THE SMOGH PUMP. If not, your a/c compressor will be loose and that is no good. The black thing you are refering to can go. I think it is called the AIR diverter. Your AIR lines screw into your manifolds (if you still have them) and all you have to do is get some plugs from your local hardware store to fix that problem. 3/8 I think, but I am not sure. Your cats.....I would just cut them off and replace them with all pipe. Thats what I have done and the sound is awesome. This will clean up some space (with AIR diverter crap gone) in your engine compartment and maybe give you about 5 ponies. I know, not much but every little bit helps. Have you done the TB bypass yet???? Another freebie good for about 5 more ponies. The fuel canister is something I did not mees with and now am curious.

Hope this helps

no i havent done the tb bypass yet.

i bought the car with a carb on it and the tpi in pieces. im trying to put it all back together like stock with the free mods and such so its actually easier to put back together. half the emissions stuff came in a box and id rather not have to put it back on. and the coolant hoses were all modified for the carb so now would be the time to do the tb bypass but i havent made it that far yet being that hoses tend to get in the way of youre work. thanks for the suggestion i would have been asking about that later when i got that far.

i have dual cats, do you think that they are a restriction? they arent necessarily in the eng comp. where i need the extra room. and wasnt going to remove them unless they caused a problem. what do ya think its only a 305?

air tubes are gone now and air diverter is scrapped also. now when i get it running the cats may go but i need to know more about this fuel canister removal. what does it do in the first place and what all are you able to remove? im thinking its the thing that sits next to my air filter canister in the firebirds but im really not sure. if so that would be awesome to get out of there. more room to do some cold air modifications!

please elaborate a little...

The charcoal canister is part of the vapor recovery system. I removed the lines and pluged them. No check engine light . I have no emissions on my car removed everything. I also removed the A/C compressor and lines as the car is going on a diet. I don't know how much you can see in the link in my sig. I have some work to do tomorrow in the garage and will take a couple of engine shots. I think the one in the link still has the A/C on. Check back tomorrow and I will add a few new pics. Also removed the cat converter and picked up about 10 HP. email if you have any other questions.
