Gutting Cat???

My cat is really old and I don't need to pass emissions for 2 more years so is it a good idea to gut my cat??? Will it sound better or worse?? Will it help my exhaust flow better??

I am eventually going to get a new one. I am asking if in the mean time that gutting it will help anything at all?

It will if your cat is clogged.

I am using a Random High Flow Cat and I don't use the AIR so I can removed the AIR pipe and while I am at it, I remove the entire AIR system.

Not sure what car you are refering to but basically, if you take out the cat, you can take out the AIR tube going to it, take off the AIR diverter valve and finally the AIR pump. Also along the line, you can cap off the AIR tubes that pump air into the exhaust manifold or headers.

Will probably flow better but sound worse. Unless you straight-pipe it.

Thank you for answering my question finally. What would be the difference between a hollowed out cat and a straight pipe?

I cannot remember what A.I.R. stands for, but I can tell you how the system works. It starts from the pulley on the air pump and pushes air into your manifolds & your cats. This helps with emission gasses.

All you have to do is by a smaller belt if you have a serpentine system and by little caps to insert in the manifolds. Rip out the tubing down to the cats and cap those off with some wire feed weld or something.

If you just gut it, it makes turbulance from bouncing around in there. with the staight pipe the air just shoots right down the pipe. But I'm not sure how much of a difrence it realy makes between the two. A straight pipe will probable sound better too, but harder to install.

As far as removing the AIR/smog/emissions CRAP, I recomend it. It gets rid of the sometimes squieky smog pump, all those hoses and plastic value on the passager side of the engine. I want to know what size belt you will need let me know and I will go check mine, oh yeh I pass my emiisions test without all that crap but, with a hi flow cat.

Cat? Whats that....I dont think I have one of those

If you can get away without emmisions just cut it out and put in a straight pipe. Or a high flow cat.

i asked this place by my crib if they could take out my cats and put a pipe in it's place and they told me no cuz it's illegal and i could be fined... but i was like "i dont care let me get fined" and they still wouldn't do it and they told me to do it myself... if im going to do it myself, i might as well gut them since i dont know how to weld. is it difficult to take off the cats? what do i need to do?
