Gutting the Airbox, Need to mount the air sensor
I was told that the sensor on my air box in my 1989 Firebird is an air temperature sensor. I want to remove my air box and stick an open air filter in. How can mount the air temperature sensor further down the pipe without it falling off and sucking in dirt, ruining my engine?
You need to put it closer to where the actual air enters the air box. Not only does it give a more accurate reading, it does the same thing as the SLP temp sensor relocator. I have heard different opinions on if it actually does anything, whether you bought the slp part or just did it yourself.
It is mounted to the side of the airbox. The sensor is a little clip that plugs into the mount on the airbox. I can get a picture if needed. I am just so cared of moving it and having it fall out and stuff goes in the hole it was once in.
If you're going with a conical filter you could just drill a hole in the rubber end of the filter (the far end of the filter) and shove it in there. Otherwise, anywhere in the pipe between the filter and the engine will do just fine, as long as it's sealed up reasonably well. Drill a hole in a flat area of the pipe, put it in, seal it and hold it in place with a little smear of RTV.
Is this a V6 car? TPI V8s had it screwed into the bottom of the intake manifold. TBI V8 cars had it in the back of the TB or screwed into the intake, I think.
