Got my RS today........but

WooHoo I got my RS today Im happy as hell.
I am having a problem I am hoping you all can help me with thoe. my oil pressure is screwed up.
I noticed on my way home that the oil pressure gauge droped into the red, as I got out of the 60 zone and had to reduce speed I noticed the gauge showed no pressure at all. once I made it to the 30 zone and had to give it a little gas the pressure came back just out of the red.
the few times I have had the car running today and the one other time Ive driven it today the pressure has not remained consistant except for one time.
so is my oil pump going out, or is there possably a simpler sloution?

First off change your sig.........NEW OWNER!!!!! Secondly......You should have an oil sending unit on the driver side of the block right below your ehaust manifold. It has a wire coming out of it. Undo the clip and pull off harness...Now remove the oil sending unit(I had to jack up my car and get it underneath) with wrench of choice and replace with new one. Should do the trick..... Oh yeah...On your wheels post, I have gone with the ROH series (Snipers to be a little more detailed) made in Australia.

Dont trust your gauges. the stock gauges are increibly inacurate, espesially as the car gets older. Get a full tune up and oil change and you should be set. If the oil pressure gauge really bothers you then go get a leak down test and that will show whats up with your car.

The oil pressure senders in these cars are bad about getting ruptured diaphragms...I would replace it first and then see what happens. A '91 isn't really old enough to be having oil pump wear problems, unless it's really been beaten on.

I've had to replace my oil press. sender twice since I got the car in '97.

It sounds like changing the oil sending unit should be the first thing I try then!
How hard is it to change, and about how much does it cost?

Also the guys at the car lot that I got the car from said to not remove this black piece they said these cars over heat if it is removed(it apparently brings air up to the radiator). is that true? reason Im wondering is I cant drive a block down the road with out it scraping the ground. it gets quite annoying.

My dad and I got one from AutoZone for about 8 or 9 bucks. He put it in my 91 RS and the gauge reads fine now.

Thats not bad at all, I'll have to go first thing in the morning and get one.
assuming that is the problem it should be ok to drive to and from the auto store(total of 30 miles) right?

That "black piece" is your airdam....it's a vital necessity and if you take it off your car WILL overheat when the weather warms up. It pulls air up off the road and directs it to the radiator.

And yeah the sender's pretty cheap...takes a few minutes to put in 'cuz you have to jack the car up and do it from the bottom...it's located right above the oil filter. It's a 1 1/8" wrench size I believe (I just use vise grips so I don't have to buy the big wrench.) Might as well change the oil while your down there since you just got the car. That way you KNOW when it was last changed...

Oh yeah, this is a little off topic but since both our RS's aren't modded yet I figured I should share the wealth. A couple of weeks or so ago I came across this web page dedicated to the L03 (our engines). It'll explain why your engine is horsed the way it is, why tbi is good, make comparisons to other Camaro models of the same time frame, and four mod links for 305 tbi Camaro's. The lowest powered link was dyno'd at 290 hp. When I get the $$$ I'll start making mods to mine as well. Here's the link!

Did anyone suggest actually checking your oil to make sure you have enough!

I wanted to suggest that in my first reply, but I naturally assumed they would have checked that first either prior to the purchase of the car, or most definitely after they noticed the gauge kept registering that there wasn't any pressure. I also assume other replies were made w/ such things in mind as well. Not trying to be a smart@$$ just explaining.

it was 2 quarts low when I got it (I hate when stupid people own nice cars) but as was assumed, that was the first thing I checked

Well I got the oil pressure sending unit changed this morning. there was a little oil in the plug end of it and where the plastic for the plug end meets the metal part that screws into the block it had become slightly seperated on one side.
after it was changed I started the car gave it a little gas and the oil pressure gauge went up to 30 and stayed there. I havent had a chance to drive it yet, but hopefully it will stay at 30 wile driving.

If anyone else needs to change this, the part cost me $23.95 at autozone, and took a 1 1/16in wrench, which sadly was not the same as the old one so I had to use vice grips to get the old one out

It seems like that's how they usually go out...blow the diaphragm and leak out the back end where the connections are. You'd think after 12 years that someone would have fixed the design problem and replacement parts wouldn't do that but nooooo that would make too much sense now wouldn't it?
