god damn 3rd gen! problems!!!

every now and then my car would sputter and die out when i hit 3rd gear (A4, 88 camaro with 87 LG4), well i adjusted the choke and it didnt give any probs for a few days, about 5 minutes ago i pulled out from my road, hit 3rd gear and it died....got it started and came home in 2nd gear....pulled in the driveway and reved the **** out of it....from any rpm - 5500 it will stutter then go to 5500.....even if i ease to 3k THEN stomp it, it stutters

btw its a Q-jet

any ideres?

Try changing your fuel filter. Maybe you are starving it. Another place to look is the distributor cap & rotor and see if it's got evidence of carbon arcing. If the cap & rotor look at all old, just buy a new one. They are cheap enough.

So, if you drop the hammer from a stop, it'll accelerate just fine through first gear, hit second gear and accelerate just fine, then hit third gear and dump out on you??

Sounds like either the carb float bowl is running dry (read: bad fuel filter or fuel pump) or else your spark is going away, maybe from heat.

yeah, 1st and 2nd gear runs great, then 3rd and BAM the RPM's drop to around 500....i gotta shift to N and rev the hell outta her, then put it back in drive......up untill about 2 weeks ago it would be fine if i reved it then went on my way...but now it dies the second it hits 3rd gear no matter what

and it doesnt matter what speed, or how hard the car is pulling btw

thanks for the tips/info

Because you've emptied the fuel bowls by then. I'll bet if you hooked up a fuel pressure gauge and monitored it you'd find the pressure dropping significantly when the symptoms occur (or just before they occur). The carb has no idea what gear you're in. This is the most common symptom of a weak fuel pump. I had the same thing happen to me years ago. Inspect the entire fuel system and replace the pump.

Qjets can run fine on anywhere from 2-6 psi. No higher. 2-3 psi is sufficient for normal driving, but will not feed the carb enough during secondary operation.

I was gonna say that you need to adjust yout tip in a bit and also probably re-jet with a little bigger jets.

Quadrajets dont use jets.. they use Metering rods.
