Good exhaust combo?
http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...95&prmenbr=361
Is this a nice exhaust system by Edelbrock?
Worth it for my 5.0?
How much hp ya expect from this?
And...
http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...17&prmenbr=361
How about this set of headers?
How much hp?
How about this Cat?
http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...91&prmenbr=361
Is this a good cat?
Which model # should I use to fit my car?
Is this a good exhaust setup? Will it sound nice? Will it all fit together?
I am tryin to get an exhaust system together.. need one real fast for the car..
Thanx all,
Matt

long tubes are nice if you are making the power. realize that those are going to rust and start to deteriorate quickly since they are not coated in any way. so you could be buying new ones in a couple years with the salt and winter in NY (use to live there..i know).
i think you'd be better off just getting a set of shorties. you will get good gains on your LG4 motor and you wont have to fabricate a Ypipe. you would need to have a shop fab up a ypipe to connect the long tubes to the cat-back...
another thought. if you want to pass emmissions...i'm assuming that's why you suggest the cat...than you probably wont be able to with the long tubes...it will fail most "visual" inspections, although it is possible it would pass the sniffer.
i would suggest a set of shorties, with an offroad ypipe (no cats) and that cat back that you suggested. it should be good for a solid 20-25hp gain over your stock setup.

oh...if you do still want the cat...
if you plan to use a single one:
642-94319 3'' In/Out Catalytic Converter w/ air tube
if you plan to use the long tubes, might as well have the Ypipe fabbed up with dual cats...to decrease hp lose due to restriction...
in that case
642-94316 2.50'' In/Out Catalytic Converter w/ air tube

You mean that with "just" the shorty headers I will get 20-25 hp? Or the "whole" exhaust combined?
What model # shorties? I am also looking for cheap..
Wouldn't this be a better choice for cat? (If I go with shorties) It looks as if it offers better flow.. but I dunno..
289-15143
How much hp would I get over all with both shorties and longies?
Brit IROC, this exhaust sound nice, or what?
Thanx all,
Matt

I fitted that exhust onto the stock system. Didnt sound any different really. Only made a difference when I took the cat off and put on a slp y pipe. Sounded much better then. Now I've got a complete Edelbrock system on it because an slp y pipe does not fit Edelbrock headers

DAMMIT! I don't like the stock "wussy" growl my Z makes!!
Would one of these be a better choice? (I am lookin for power, and a sweet, mellow exhaust note..)
http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...29&prmenbr=361
Even though this one is "throaty and powerful".. it will still work w/ me, as long as everyone thinks it will sound nice!
Will this catback work w/ the long tube headers and Cats I want, or no? Could I "make" them fit if they won't already?
BTW.. which model # is mine?

this is getting confusing!
ok...on a stock LG4 motor, the difference between shorties and longtubes will be minimal. mainly due to the low power output to begin with. you would probably see less than 5hp difference, with the longtubes being the more power.
another thing to consider is that you will be decreasing backpressure...what actually causes the hp gain...if you lose too much you will sacrifice low end torque.
this being said, i would recomend shortie headers (edelbrock TES are good, and they come with a Ypipe). now this set of headers is listed for 86-92, but it is the only one that is designed to mate up to a 3" cat. all the other models (designed for your year/application) are set up for a 2.25" cat...which will be restrictive. the flange, routeing and everything should be the same, but the size of the collector will be larger to accomodate a bigger cat.
behide this set of headers, you will want to install one of the 3" slip fit cats that you mentioned earlier.
behind this nearly any cat back will be an improvement. for 2 reasons...all are mandrel bent, meaning they have no kinks in the bends to slow exhaust flow, and second they should all be full 3" tubing which will flow much better than the stock tubing.
hooker and edelbrok or flowmaster are all good choices. but would probably give you the tone you desire. if you want ultimate flow, install a cutout in the catback, before it loops over the axle. that way you can uncap the cutout, and run "no muffler" for the track or a race. and it sounds badass!!!
now....lets see...
if you go the longtube route, you'll need to have a Ypipe fabricated up, and to that you'll attach one of hte 3" cats you listed, and they you could attach any of the mentioned catbacks to it from there.
this would probably only gain you less than 5hp total over the setup i mentioned above.
and when i said 20-25...that was for the whole setup...headers, ypipe, cat, and catback exhuast. many companies will claim more...but in the real world...10-15 for headers, and 10 for a good catback...give or take.
another thing to consider, as i kind of eluded to, on a stock lg4 motor you probably wouldn't gain as much power total as you would if you already had a new cam, heads and intake manifold. they kindda compliment each other...know what i mean?
picture your exhaust as something you breath out of...
a child (your stock low hp motor) could breath through a garden hose (stock exhaust) without much trouble, but an adult (built motor) would choke through that same hose.
that same child would not gain much if he were breathing through a 3" pipe (new exhaust), since he was doing fine with the hose there isn't much to gain. BUT...the adult would be MUCH better off breathing through that larger 3" pipe compared to the hose...
does that analogy help?
man i hope this clears up some confusion...

DAMMIT TO HELL.. THIS "IS" GETTING CONFUSING!!!!! Lol..
Well.. if the diff. between shorties and longtuber's is only 5hp.. then I am gonna go with the shorties, and still maintain emissions..
I know what ya mean about the "cam, intake, etc..".. but I am gonna wait till the cash starts flowin in a lil better..
BTW.. thanx for the analogy.. that "does" help.. better way to think of it!
Ok.. so now I am lookin for a CHEAP BUT GOOD SET OF HEADERS, and exhaust and cat to compliment it.. lookin for a 3-incher!
Thanx man,
Matt
