Question A funny noise when I punch it??

Yet another problem in the pages of my '89 Formula's history...It's a 350 TPI, and not to brag, but when I punch it the front end tries to shoot for the horizon, but it makes a really odd sound when it does it. Right when I crack down on it, it makes an odd drumming sound...It's fast at first, but as my RPMs get higher, it slows down and gets louder until right before it shifts, and then it starts doing it fast again until my RPMs climb. It does it in every gear when I'm hammering it, and the steering wheel and shifter vibrate noticeably too. My buddies told me it might be my torque converter or my bellhousing, and said it felt unbalanced, but I'd like to get some opinions on here first.

Imbalanced driveshaft and/or Broken tranny mount...Check for both (the tranny mount being easiest).

Wink

That noise is just your tires melting the pavement as your ripping through gears I'd bet on the tranny mount, when mine went my console and dash would shake like it was in an earthquake it was so bad so if anything i think the tranny mount.

Question

I thought it was the tranny mount too, so I changed it a couple weeks ago and it kept doing it.

What about the rubber bushing at the end of the torque arm? That or the engine mounts?

I agree it wouldnt be a bad idea to check the engine mounts I mean if your engine is strong ebough to yank you front tires like that it would surely rock the whole car if it came loose

Question

Is it like a fluttering sound??? How how is your timing set?? Could be that you are detonating due to timing being high, bad gas, or engine temps. I had a helluva time trying to figure it out on mine, but once I did NO MORE NOISE!!!

It could possibly be the front universal joint starting to go. Not positive but it's worth a shot.
