Fuel Regulator
Fuel Regulator
Yet another problem :: sigh ::. Just got the carburetor rebuilt (due to flooding and leaks), and I got a mallory 4 port regulator. I'm only using 3 ports with the 4th blocked off. The carburetor worked great for about 2 weeks, but now my problem is that my fuel gauge says I'm running ~4.5-5 psi but the carburetor keeps flooding. It didn't do this right after we put it on, this is just a recent thing. I've checked the floats and those are fine, they move freely and all. We even put my old quadra jet on there and that flooded as well, although the gauge says under 5 psi fuel pressure. I'm beginning to think something's really screwy about my regulator. I switched from a efi v6 to carbed v8 so I'm using the stock pump and stock fuel lines, any ideas?
Re: Fuel Regulator
There's nothing wrong with your regulator. You're getting some trash in the carb's needle/seat inlet assembly. Clean it out then make sure your fuel filter in the nose of the carb is fresh and installed correctly. That would mean with the filter inlet pointing towards the fuel line side and with the spring installed behind it to hold it against the inlet nut.
That's classic symptoms for a carb that's getting fed dirty fuel. Runs fine for a while when new but quickly the flooding problem returns becuase the trash continues to be fed into the new, clean carb.
Alternatively, you could remove the factory fuel filter from the nose of the carb and use an external/aftermarket fuel filter patched into the feed line from the regulator to the carb. The Fram G3 filter is cheap and effective for this. It is a clear see-through design and has 3/8" hose nipples on either end which are the same size as the factory fuel line- very easy to patch it in.
