Fuel filter change - mess

Good Lord talk about splatter. I had no idea this car could build so much pressure. I dropped at least half a gallon on the ground with the initial blow.
Guess I am too used to lower pressure TBI in my truck (you can stand underneath the filter, smoke a cig, drink a 44oz DP, and still be just fine).

Your way

Hi Pro, how did you go about changing your fuel filter? I'm real interested, Thanks. I'm trying to change mine but a lot of fuel is coming out. Did everything to relieve fuel pressure... p.s. see my thread under same subject...

Well first off, make sure you relieve the pressure in the gas tank (just unscrew cap). Also, it is recommended to yank out the fuel pump fuse when you start it so that the motor just burns up whatever pressure is left in the lines.

I was messing around with the fuses, and absolutely could not find the fuse (which they claim was labeled "FP"). The two relays in the fuse box are labeled "VDO", so i figured that was the guages ( I used to own a 1980 450SL that had VDO on it's guages... so thats how I thought of that). So I just said screw it, ill do like my truck and just unscrew it.

The filter is about half an arms length from the side of the vehicle.
I guess it lines up with about where the drivers outside door handle is located (but obviously underneath the car). The filter runs horizontile (IE the outlet of the filter points towards the passenger side, and inlet to the drivers). The fuel lines are metal.
The lines go into the filter on each side, but the lines are secured with like a 16mm nut (which stays on the fuel line).
Its so hard to explain without pictures. Ill take some of my truck (exact same design... even same part numbers) since it will be easier for me to get underneath.

basically once you find the filter its pretty self explanatory as to everything else just unscrew it and put the new one on. As far as fuel coming out theres nothing much you can do....relieveing the pressure means instead of spraying out of the line it pours....either way the fuels coming out. Just do it as quickly as possible because gasoline all over your arms up to your elbows really burns.....

be careful tho ive heard of people doing weird things like twisting the fuel lines when they tried to get the filter off and ended up having to replace the whole line.

unplug the fuel pump, its just up by the differential, its a 3 prong connector, start the car, let it die, pressure relieved.

I noticed that - thought that was an unusual place for a relay.

I just put a rag on the schraeder valve and press it to drain the fuel. That or leave it overnight.

Dies instantly

When you pull out 3 wire prong, motor dies instantly, no pressure relieved. After all I've heard, the best I think is to pull out fuel pump fuses (FP) and let the motor run a bit. Then turn it off

But, also, I noticed that the 305TBI keeps on running even with only one injector running (inj.#1). With the 2 FP taken out , the motor will never die. Fuel still flows. I heard through a failsafe sytem that uses oil pressure (oil pump?) to push fuel at the TBI's inj. #1.

So that means that if I turn off the oil pump(?) then no more fuel will get to the TBI?...total fuel pressure relieved...?

- Is that possible?

- Possible damage?

If not possible, I'll change the filter with fuel running down my latex gloves and my forearms...what can you do...

Thanks again

Hmm I dont see how that TBI setup works.
On my truck (1995 350 TBI) it doesnt do this... then again, probably different setup all together.

If you take out the fuel pump fuse, then it should quit pumping fuel all together, right? Whether or not the fuel injectors repond, it shouldnt even have any fuel to respond to...?

According to Haynes

step

1. Remove the fuel punp fues located in the fues block . Located inside the passenger compartment under the left side of the dash .
2.Start it , then let it run untill the lack of fuel causes it to stop.
3.Engage the starter for about 3 seconds to make sure the pressure is relieved .
4.Turn the key off and disconect the Negative battery terminal.
5. After serviceing the fuel system , reinstall the fuel pump fuse.

...there is a fuel pump fuse in the cluster .... Top level ...second over from the left labelled " f pump"

and I have twisted my fuel lined before ..... amke sure you don't ....because gas REALLY burns . and I had to jerry rig it so I can drive it ....untill I can get new lines done
