Flowmaster- Good or Bad?

I have heard some rumors of Flowmaster mufflers being just as restrictive as a stock muffler. Could this be true? I find this hard to believe, but have heard this. Has anyone seen a test or dyno results of different performance mufflers or cat-back comparisons? I have a Fowmaster muffler on mine, replacing the stock original one. Maybe someone can shed some light on this.

dynomax flows a hell of alot better then flowmaster. the only realy flowmasters that flow well are the race series. i would stick with some dynomax ultra flows. they sound great and flow great.

people just like flowmaster because the make a good bolt on kit wich is nice. and if u have a cut out i guess would be good for racing too. but the dynomax does flow alot better then "street" flowmaster.

dynomax>flowmaster>stock

that's generally the rule of thumb, depending on which muffler or catback you get of course
but just a muffler, dynomax beats flow

The 80 series crossover flowmaster is a muffler bought for sound, not really performance. The best type of muffler for performace would be a bullet style, or none at all. I am using Flow Pro twisters on my true duals, and they are slightly more restrictive than bullets, but freer flowing than a traditional design muffler as they are a straight through design. Of y pipe equipped systems, SLP's Loudmouth and the 4" Mufflex are some of the best, but they still doesn't compare to true duals, as it has a resonator instead of a true muffler or large 4" intermediate pipe, then come exhausts like Borla and Corsa, then your Hookers, Dynomax's, and Random Techs, then Flowmaster and then finally stockers. If you want to have a car that can be both loud on one hand and quiet at other times, either a cut out or Borla is the way to go. Me, I like em loud, so I have true duals on my modded Z, and will have either Borla, Loudmouth, or true duals on my 88.

Hope that helps!

I went with the Force II because I wanted the single out for some god unknown reason (young + stupid). It sounds good at idle with my small cam, but its pretty raspy at WOT. I picked up .3 with a cat and catback from stock and it sounded pretty good when the car was stock. If you're not going to modify a lot and want a decent sound I'd recommend it. If you're planning for the future, look at the Hooker cat-back.

I gained 21rwhp and 8rwtq by opening the cutout (before cat) on the dyno in 2nd gear. I have a stock catback with a Flowmaster 80 series.

I am switching over to a Hooker cat back after hearing alot of soundclips/videos, and hoping that I will pick up some extra horsepower when the cutout is closed. It is 3" mandrel bent and sounds awesome

The product line is great. The 80 series "Crossflow" muffler for the F-Bodies is terrible I think though. It's just too damn typical. I think it sounds terrible on both stock and heavily modifed cars. I had it on my last 2 cars ONLY because they were on when I bought them. I changed to a 40 series 3" single in/out muffler and it's MUCH meaner. Idle is throatier, part throttle is deeper and full throttle is not deeper but just a lot cleaner/smoother/and louder overall. Oh and on decel it doesn't pop or rattle or gurrgle like an 80 series will sometimes. On yeah, and in comparion, this 40 series will "drone" at 3000rpm instead of 2000rpm like the 80 series. In other words, it doesn't "drone" or resonate the whole cabin area while cruising. It was easier to package under the car also. later man

Flowmasters suck, at least IMO. They do sound better i guess than stock, but only because they are louder. They dont flow very well either. The 3 chamber systems have flow numbers that are not that much over stock, at least compared to the other catbacks. Another thing is that EVERYONE who doesn't know too much about cars only knows flowmasters, and thats the only thing good enough for there car. I'm not saying whoever has flowmasters doesn't know cars though, its just an opinion of sound. I would never get flowmasters because everyone and there brother has them on everything.

The Hooker system is excellent IMO. I think thats the best 3rd gen system out there (except GMMG), especially for the price, at less that 300 dollars! Or you could run true duals

i think they fixed the decel "popping" problem in their at (american thunder) package
i think that 80 series is like 5 inches width instead of the normal muffler's 4 inches
something like that

I have always heard that you get a Flowmaster for the sound.

I'm not sure what my muffler is (was told it's some type of flowmaster), but that doesn't matter, I don't close the cutout much

I agree with the suggestion of the Hooker Cat Back. I love it on my car. My friend has flowmaster on his car and it sounds alright but the droning gets old really quick.

You ever see one cut open, there's all kinds of air defecting baffles in FM's, it must hurt flow some...
Look thru an Edelbrock "RPM" muffler, you can see right thru it...not real loud either...
FM just has that Classic "sound" everone loves.

when i bought my car from some lady, she had someone put on a flowmaster exhaust... have no idea which one it is though. it has a dual outlet though for the exhaust... anyways, i always knew that flowmasters were restrictive, so i was thinking of either getting a new exhaust that would give me some much needed power, or to get cutouts. if i get cutouts, then it really doesn't matter what type of exhaust i have right? my flows sound bad *** since i dont have cats on my car anymore... whenever i rev my engine, i pretty much scare people from racing me, lol, but if i'll make more power with a better exhaust than with a cut out, i'll go with the exhaust. any suggestions?

Racing Flowmasters are good, if you want to go higher than that be prepared to spend some $$$.
