flowmaster exhaust

oh this is probally the most abused question but i was wondering how this sounded to you guys, i have an 88 iroc z that is all stock right now, the factory exhaust is rotting off of it and i was thinking about a new one.. heres my plan. 3" back from the cat into a flowmaster 1 chamber that is 6 1/4" long in that area before the axle thats indented then over the axle into a y pipe that im going to fabricate that looks alot like the SLP loudmouth then out to dual 3" pipes into turndowns that reseble the stock exhaust. i was wondering if that would be too obnoxious even thought i have the stock cat, (damn those emissions) and the car is all stock. in the future im going to turbo the car so that would cut down on the noise too but i want to know about now... thanks

HAHA, its funny u say that. Last summer I was gonna do the same thing, exact to my 88 IROC, but my drivetrain is signifficantly modified. I ordered and still have in the box, the 1 chamber race muffler thats about 4-6 inches long, and their universal Y pipe to split it over the axles to resemble the loudmouth. I had it on the hoist at my best muffler shop that has done 4 of my cars and the owner is a former Funny Car drag racer, so he knows a few things about performance. We held the muffler up to the floor board to about where the right rear seat is but it was too bulky around the driveshaft and torque arm was on the other side. Second, the floor board contours wouldn't permit it properly and turning it ever so sideways to get it out of the way of the driveshaft compromised the ground clearance by too much, it would have ripped off at the slightest bump. Then the Y pipe was too big for the confines of the non existant room from the muffler and the axle and panhard rod. I said make it fit somehow, but they just couldn't and I didn't want to hack the car just to be a little louder than before. So I just installed the Flowmaster cat-back American Thunder system and I love it. Its still god damn loud and the interior resonance is acceptable, but outside is very loud, especially at nite downtown when it echoes off the buildings.

I plan on installing an elec. cutout just ahead of the Cat. for alittle more noise when wanted and so the Nitrous won't ruin my Cat at the track.
If you are dead set on doing a loudmouth type mock up, it is possable with the Dynomax Bullet style mufflers, no problem, but I've never been a dynomax sound fan. The next thing I could suggest and something I've considered, is the GMMG slit dual setup that splits after the axle and utilizes the 69 style muffled chambers that are very kool and deep tone. I believe they were put on Berger's performace Camaros and even the Dale Earnhardt and ZL1 SS's. I have considered their setup, but the price was outta this world, I think.
Good luck.

Well, what sort of conditions does the car see? For instance, mine is driven all year round and WI salts the road so I would go for a SS one.

its a summer car only... so corrosion resistance is no problem.. actually what i really want to know is if it is going to be obnoxiously loud or just like a kick *** loud.. open headers is obnoxious imo but i like the sound of a flowmaster so i should be happy...

i have the american thunder system and honestly wish it was louder, i do though like when your cruzing at 80mph and let of the gas the exhaust growls like a mother, i love alot of interior noise , since i have no radio , if i could i run around with nothing but headers, but thats a dream, and i took my cat off and it got louder.

i ordered my muffler today.. 3" center in center out flowmaster 1 chamber delta flow the 6 1/4" long one... i made some rough measurements and it will fit aslong as my suspension is not fully extended. my car is lowered 2" so it helps with the driveshapt clearance but the muffler might scrape... but oh well my fried has an american thunder kit on his car and it scrapes the int. pipe sometimes so i will live with it.. hopefully i can get a dig cam and ill post pics of it and let you all know how it goes! i cant wait!
