Fireballlll!!

Ok, we're into fine tuning this engine we've got. We've got a couple oil changes and the 60-40mph break in done, so we're gettin into tuning the WOT part of it. When we stomp on the gas, weather its in gear or sitting in park, there is a nice fireball that shoots up out of the carb, successfully melting the edelbrock pro-flo airfilter, lol. since this problem arose, we've put an accel coil on, new plugs, new advancing springs. I put the springs in the kit that gave the "in the middle" curve. This produced the same results as the stock springs. What should i do to get rid of this filter element melting problem? This engine is a 350 bored 30 over, vortech heads with 64cc chambers, hei ignition, non computer controlled, edelbrock airgap rpm intake, 750 edelbrock carb. Thanks for any help. p.s. my logic is telling me it's advanced too far

I'd just assume something was wrong about the timing

Who put the engine together?

I built the engine myself. I used a stock timing set, (chain and gears) so i didn't get the keyways messed up. the gears only went on one way.

Make sure your timing marks are lined up on the timing gears. Once that is in order, do a timing set up from scratch wich includes pointing the rotor at the number one cylinder while it is top dead center. If it does not run right, grab a book for ten bucks and follow the instructions to do it right. If you seriously need help setting up timing ( wich is no doubt your problem) let me know and I can give you instructions. My first engine I built ended up in violent backfires despite my confidence. Quite often it is as simple as the distrubutor being off by 180 deegrees.

thanks for the advice man, but i've already got the book and followed it like a bible. Both the timing marks on the gears were lined up exactly when i put the cover on, trust me i checked many times. I got the #1 piston on tdc of the compression stroke, found where the #1 cylinder post was on the distributor cap, made a mark and measured 2 1/4" counterclockwise and pointed the distributor there, dropped in the distributor, the rotor turned back to point towards #1. would not run when i did it by the book. so i pulled it up, turned it one tooth clockwise (advanced) and it runs. I'm going to try a stiffer advance spring later today, i found a major oil leak i've gotta take care of first. if you can think of anything else, drop me a line. Thanks.
