Finally changing rearends!

Well I went ahead and got the 10 bolt 3.23 rearend non locking.....yeah it has drums on it but screw it......I was spending to much money driving around looking for a disc rear with the right gears..I mean I spent 40 bucks yesterday just driving to go see that 9 bolt and it was only a 2.77 rear and it would have costed to much to get a carrier and gears for that since they are hard to find....

so I'll just put an SLP posi unit in this and better gears and be done with it....

Now my delema is what gears do I want? 3.42 or 3.73?

For my mods what would be the better gear? 3.23, 3.42 or 3.73?

The car is a daily driver in the summer and sometimes a highway traveler going on trips to Florida and AL...

Can someone point me to the bearing kit that I will need?

being a TPI car,id go 3.42...dont go 3.73. but since u use it as a driver for those long trips...its almost better to go 3.23 unless u can stand to loss a little less gas mileage as w/ the 3.42's. i dont think there would be a big difference in change of gas mileage, but the choice is yours.

hope thats helps

i thought about it this way. my cars not to radical now. but in the future i plan on making it more extreme so i figured what the hell let me put the 3.73 in there i fi ever need it itll be in there. i also want an a$$load or torque so thats what i picked. really all depends on what your going to be doing with it in the future. i only really drive my car 3000 miles from may-october the one long highway trip i go on is 150 miles each way all highway to english town.

I thought 90 to 92 all came with the 28 spline axles?

THIS REaR BETTER HAVE THE 28's.....I went on advice from reading the boards. sez all 90-92 came with 28......change over year was 89.

If it doesnt then I taking it back to the junk yard.
Bad thing is Ive cleaned it, painted it, and removed all the old shoes and hardware and drained the grease... cause im going to replace all that with new stuff.

But just like my current rearend I cant get the locking bolt off to pull the axles...Im waitign on my neighbor to get home so he can tig weld a wrnech to it just like I had to do last time when I changed a leaking axles seal.

Good, then the SLP Torsen unit will work. I was worried that you might have bought an early 26 spline unit and wanted to put the SLP unit in. In that case the 9 bolt would have been cheaper. Looks like you did your homework

how do you figure that? the 9 only hd 2.77 gears in it. I would have had to buy a carrier and gears for that.

In the last year alone I've seen at least 3-4 9 bolts, with 3.45 gears, a good posi, and brakes go for around $500-$600.

If the rear had been 26 spline, you'd be paying for the rear, 28 spline axles, the SLP unit, the gears and install kit, and the labor to set up the rear. That's well over $500
