Fiberglass conversion

I am currently a student at Wyotech in laramie, and am starting chassis fab. and high performance engines here soon, my 3rd gen is unbelievably heavy and was thinking of converting my quarters and hatch into fiberglass. im not a body guy so i was hoping to get a little insight on the whole thing?

Well if you mean to purchase, here is the rear hatch.

There was also a wide body kit offered years ago that had fiberglass front fenders. But the 1/4 panels were a fib. lay over so no weight savings there.

EDIT:
Here is a Z28 with the wide kit on E-bay. Its a dark car so kinda hard to see that the front fenders are wider.

Ok I actually found the stuff on sale right now. But it says even the front fenders are layovers so this might not be good for you.

Those Ebay items are not replacements but add ons.

There are a few third gen fiberglass items but because of the unibody design, there isn't a huge selection.

Fiberglass front fenders probably add weight to the car. The factory steel front fenders don't weigh very much. The inner fenders are part of the chassis itself as they hold the front struts. Fiberglass doors are designed as a race only item. They're normally designed for a fixed Lexan window. Although expensive, they can shave off a lot of weight. Complete power option factory doors are 105 pounds each. A fiberglass door might be less than 30 pounds.

About the only way to have close to an entirely fiberglass body is with a body kit hung off a tube chassis.

My car is a gutted race car. I don't know what the car's weight is but the race weight is under 3100 pounds and that's with a BBC and a full cage. The only thing fiberglass is the hood and all the glass has been changed to Lexan.
