Extremely high idle

I start the car up, and it jumps to 1500 and climbs gradually to 2000-2100 rpms.
I quickly shut the car off for fear that something could blow and it started to "deisel" of course..I can't let it idle like that but I have to warm the car up. Also,
I was able to put up with the 1500 rpm idle for 2 minutes in this New Jersey winter weather and after driving around everything was normal (idling at 600 at stops, and whatnot).

305 4bbl carb
700r4 trans
93k miles

Normally idles at around 600-900

EDIT: I searched before I posted this, but came up with two threads. Both went unanswered.

Re: Extremely high idle

Sounds like somehting with your timing is focked up. Either your Distributor, and maybe yur cam timing. (I am not POSITIVE that cam timing will cause that, but for sure Dist. timing will)

Really? It's not missing or anything, car runs great (replaced dist., wires and plugs last year), just very high idle when I start her up in the mornings. When it's warmed up, like say 5 minutes of idle in the morning, it's back to normal. I was thinking more along the lines of the IAC..but wasn't sure.

yeah I thought maybe it wasn't closing, which would explain why it's taking so long to warm up. Good call, I'll have to check.

I'm thinking about it. I'm not sure about counts, and that sort of stuff. I'll have to look up the procedure somewhere (Aklim, I'm looking at you )
Thanks Rob

Re: Extremely high idle

Ya, timing could cause the dieseling you are talking about; but here is another idea. Try unplugging the automatic choke, and THEN try starting the car. See if it runs right then, and then let us know.
