external fuel pump...

I've got a holley out of tank pump, the original pump is still in the tank. can i tap into the main fuel line and suck fuel through the old fuel pump or do i need to get into the fuel tank and change some stuff?

You could tap into the fuel line and install the new pump and see how it works for you, if it is too restrictive running throught the dead pump, drop the tank and remove the in-tank unit.
my car was originally carbed so I didn't have to mess with that, just installed my in-line holley and I was good to go.

we got it worked out, we ended up using a return line that goes to the bottom of the tank that has an equal line size. we put a filter infront of the pump so i'm not too worried about junk gettin sucked into it from the tank.

What are you using for a return line??? Your pump is deffinetly going to pump to much fuel to the regulator... What I did was drop the tank, take out the fuel sending unit. take it up to a radiator shop have them take off the pump and weld in a tube that follows the same route and length as the in tank pump. Install sending unit and pump. Be sure to look at what two colors of wires are powering the in tank pump. strip wires back to where you want to mount the pump. cut the line , wire in the pump, with the filter infront and your done.. Now you will never have to drop your tank again. I even went a step further and put a sock type filter on the end of the fuel sending unit tube so that I didn't get any debris stuck in the pipe and restrict the flow, cause I would hate to have to drop that tank ever again..

yes, dropping those tanks do suck royally. there are three lines that run to and from the tank. 2 go toward the bottom, (one has the intank pump on it, one just goes to the bottom.) the other just opens up at the top of the tank. we put our return line on the one that opens up at the top of the tank. it all works fine, the engine runs great, no fuel leaks, 5.5 psi on the carb side of the regulator, 7 psi on the pump side.
