Exhaust/Muffler
Exhaust/Muffler
i have an 88 350 tpi and it has an hooker catback system on it and it isn't quite loud or sounds powerful enough for me. could i just get a different muffler of should i just go with a whole new exhuast(i was looking at a dynomax instead)
Re: Exhaust/Muffler
Do you have headers on your car now? Getting a set will change the sound of your exhaust for the better, as well as yeild better throttle response and power. If I were you, I would go with a Header/Y-Pipe combo instead and keep the Hooker Muffler (aerochamber?) first.
If that is not the case and you already have headers, and you still wanna go with a better sounding muffler, then go Flowmaster (possilby 40 series), as they are a company that is mainly focused on having a nasty sound. Don't get the whole exhaust, just the muffler, getting new pipes along with it is just a waste of money and won't yeild a difference in sound or power (unless they are the stock pipes). Check out this link for a sound clip of the 40 series muffler, and search around that site for other sound clips. The 40 series is as aggressive as Flowmasters come.

Re: Exhaust/Muffler
i still have stock headers but am going to upgrade to either hookers 2055(if i can get them without the air injection crap) or some coated 2460s since hooker makes a y pipe for both
as for muffler i was thinking about a flowmater series 80 since those will be a direct replacment and i will still have a tailpipe coming out both sides

Re: Exhaust/Muffler
40 series sounds A LOT better/louder/deeper and maybe even smoother than the crossflow 80 series. I never EVER reccomend the 80 series, and yes I've had it on 2 cars. 40 Series should be louder than an aerochamber also. Removing a muffler and just running a Dynomax Race Magnum Bullet muffler would be very loud also. Similar to the Loudmouth catback that SLP makes for newer cars. If that's too much, install a cone insert from Dynatech to tone it down a notch. Goodluck.
Re: Exhaust/Muffler
but is there any way i can get a 40 series on there and still have exhaust comming out both side it would look dum just coming out one side
also does any slp loudmouth fit on a thirdgen becasue thats what i would really want to get

Re: Exhaust/Muffler
i would go for the dynomax setup, i have heard a couple of those and they sound really good
i had an 80 series flowmaster on my Z and I loved how it sounded at first, but about 6 months after i put it in the tone of the exhaust changed drastically. there was no more purr and crackle to the exhaust sound, it became a droning sound that would drive me crazy..... so don't get the 80 series unless you want to replace it 6 months from now when you get sick of the sound.

Re: Exhaust/Muffler
thanks for all the feedback guys
i guess i could go with the v-force ones that are made for a camaro with in and out on the same side
but has any one ever heard of Spin Tech Mufflers (http://www.spintechmufflers.com) i was looking at the 343 sc that is just like the v-force with the in and out on the same side but which one sounds better?
i still have my stock headers but am going to upgrade soon and i will cut out the cat probably when i put a new muffler in as well

Re: Exhaust/Muffler
I was debating between Spintech and Dynomax. I chose Dynomax. I was doing it for other reasons though. I was sick of being pulled over for "loud" exhaust. This is somthing that you may want to think about before you go crazy loud with your exhaust. I got the largest muffler I could find that would still fit under my car and have the dual exits. The reason I got the largest I could get is #1 for the low deep rumble and #2 for the fact that it will absorb more of the heat from the exhaust gasses and therefore as a directly related side effect, reduce noise during putzing around town... The flowmaster 80 series was nothing short of Ratty and simply TOO loud for me. And I'm not one to be a sissy faggy pants about my performance. I'm dropping a big engine in my car right now. Its gonna fly. But I don't need to be pulled over all the time anymore and I don't need to advertise, HEY HERE I AM MY EXHAUST IS DEAFENING! LOOK AT ME. Thats a way to attract cops in a heartbeat. For the record I got pulled over 3x in 1 year for loud exhaust, I had headers and a friggin flowmaster 80 series on a "nearly" stock 350.

Re: Exhaust/Muffler
IMO and it is just my opinion. Flowmaster sound like poo. I hate that raspy sound.
I have i think its a dynomax bullet muffler. Its basically a straight through piece of pipe with fiberglass wrapped around it and i love the sound, not too loud at idle but wakes the hell up at rpm.
Another thing to look at is www.stainlessworks.com they sell a chambered exhaust that is a long straight through piping, could put it in the y-pipe just after the cat. They sound unbelievable but are borderline too loud.
Regardless id wait to change the muffler until after you get headers. Those will reeally wake up the sound of the car.

Re: Exhaust/Muffler
i probably should wait until i get some headers for a new muffler for headers i was thinkin hooker 2046 or 2055 would be nice
i don't think a loud car would be problem in my town, i would just suck for highway driving. i have friend with super 40s on his gmc and another with a 98 trans am with a borla exhaust and they have never got pulled over
