Engine Swap Questions
Engine Swap Questions
Ok here's what I got, a 88 camaro with a fuel injected 350,000 mile 2.8 V6 thats starting to show its age, and rebuilt 305 with a edelbrock carb a non com hei and crates of sbc parts(accesory brackets exhaust manifolds emissions stuff ect). I want to swap the 305 into my camaro but have a few questions (besides the obvious motor mount, coilspring, and wiring stuff). First I want to keep the car a 5 speed so I'm going to need a V8 5 speed, bellhousing, and flywheel (correct me if wrong but the driveshaft and crossmember are the same right?). As I understand there are 2 different flywheels based on the rear seal of the motor, How do I figure out which one I need and how do I tell them apart? also are most 305 cranks set up for the pilot bushings? Will the V6 clutch Hydraulics work with the V8 bellhousing? Moving on will the large body GM HEI that I have clear the firewall? Next can I just swap in the tank pick up unit from a carbed third gen run new fuel lines to the mechanical fuel pump and keep my existing tank? Lastly do I have a chance of passing emissions if I retain factory V8 smog equipment? (egr charcoal canister smog pump cat ect)
Re: Engine Swap Questions
I cant really answer most of your questions even though I had a 2.8 to a 305 TPI swap in my 86. I can tell you about the emissions! All I know is that you only have a visual inspection done! Yeah, a factory V8 emissions setup will work but it dont have to! It just has to be there! Now if you plan on keeping mileage under 5000 miles a year then get it exempt! Then you can do whatever you want! You wont need any emissions junk at all! Hope this helps you out man!
Re: Engine Swap Questions
the in-tank pick up for a carb'ed third gen new is around $350,its insane. if i was u,i would buy a Mallory adjustable fuel pressure regualtor ($80) to bring down the fuel pressure so u can run a carb off of the factory electric fuel pump.
and yes,a big HEI cap will clear the firewall.
as long as u have all the correct emissions equipment and they work, the motor is in good running condition then i dont see why it wouldnt pass emissions.
hope that helps

Re: Engine Swap Questions
Not trying to **** in your pot here (haha, i just said "pot")
but uhh... why would you go with a 305?? Do it once, do it right, 350 time... they're just about as numerous as those anemic 305s
