engine swap questions???
engine swap questions???
Ok thres a 89' rs for sale which I want to put my 406 motor in which is carberated. I am getting a good deal on it. I am going to do away with the 700r4 which I believe came in those(correct me if Im wrong) I am going to put a th-350 in it with pretty good stall. I was wondering if you could tell me if the new tranny will drop right in. Also the 406 has a mechanical fuel pump and the rs has a electrical how can I overcome this. Any help would be great thanx adam
You can pull out the intank pump and put a rubber line in it's place.
You;ll need to re-route the fuel lines in the engine bay since the lines in the engine bay are on the drivers side and your pump on the motor is on the pass side.
don't know about the tranny though, but a lot of people use that tranny so someone here should know.
I did a TBI to carb swap yesterday and used the stock electric pump with the new setup.
I used a T fitting with the feed and return lines on the ends of the T and the carb feed hooked to the middle and an inline pressure regulator on the return line.
This was a temporary solution since we couldn't find a 3 port Fuel regulator locally to drop the pressure from 14psi to 6psi.
I don't know what pressure we are running since we didn't have a fitting to plug my gauge to. But the car runs great, much faster than with the TBI setup on it.

Like I asked, why? By the time you go thru all the hassel and have to rebuild the TH350, pay for the extra gas since you have no OD, won't it just about be the same as beefing up the 700R4? Sure, if all you did was run 20 miles a week, I suppose it might be a wash but if it is a daily driver, I am sure it will add up. If you don't believe it will, fill up the tank and drive on OD till it is empty and see how many MPG you get.
OTOH, if it is a trailer queen and you need the weight savings, I would do it then.

Also depending on the tailshaft you get with your TH-350 you may have to get a new drive shaft. If its the long tail shaft tranny though it should be fine with the 700R4 driveshaft. Then you just need the crossmember kit. I think that kit comes with a braket for the torque arm too.
