Post Engine plans needed

Hey I just got a 1993 350 from a Caprice for free minus the intake. I plan on buying a 90-92 Z28 with 305 and T-tops. I plan on replacing the 305 with the 350, but I want some horsepower out of it first.

Now here is my question. Can I get around 300HP out of the 350 for less then 1,800 dollars? If so tell me how,

I might be able to score up more money but I need to buy the car first. Right now I have 1,500 and I am sending out the block to be boiled and honed as soon as I get it. I also need to sell my firebird so I can get the Z28.

Quite easily, take the 350 to and machine shop and have it bored .030 or .040 put a nice cam in it and if your going FI go pull a tpi of an IROC or if your going carburation go buy a nice holley and intake. Have a set of heads done for it too, that will make a huge difference.

Thanks man. I did plan on going TPI. Would I have buy a seperate intake for the TPI setup or could I just use the stock one?

So when I get the engine i'm going to get the block boiled and bored to .030. Should I have the heads ported and polished, with a 3 angle valve grind?

I would get an LT1 intake for the motor that you are going to build. If you plan on running high RPMs the TPI is going to run out of breath at about 4500 RPMs unless you do some major port work on the lower and upper intake. I would also look at getting some SLP (or like) runners. Or you could go with the LT1 and have a small runner design. I am going to be building a 355 and I am going to go with the LT1 intake setup for the high RPMs.

So I only need to get the LT1 intake, anything else to go with that?

MOST DEFINETLY the heads will make a HUGE difference actually while youve got everything out and at the machine shop you should get the heads shaved a little too, its not that much more and you will get a huge compression boost.

Thanks I'll make sure I'll do that. What excatly is a 3 angle valve grind? I just hear everyone say I should get a 3 angle valve grind and get the heads ported and polished.

A 3-angle valve job basically rounds off the edge of the port where the valve closes against it so that the valve flows more smoothly when open. A normal valve grind has only 1 angle, the 3-angle job just sort of knocks the edges off a little. Well worth the money if you already have the engine apart.

If yo "only" want 300 HP from the motor, then maybe you should look at the Vortech heads from either PACE or Scoggin Dickey. They also have a $450 TPI intake manifold that will fit the Vortech heads. The final piece of the puzzle is the cam. I'd recommend the Gm HOT cam, which seems to be getting a LOT of press as it's pretty popular.

These three parts will easily net you 300 horsepower, especially after you add some Edelbrock Headers and a cat-back exhaust system.

Cost-wise, this should be pretty close to your budget:

Heads for $500
Intake for $450
Edelbrock TES6872 Headers for $315
GM HOT Cam for $260
Hooker Aerochamber cat-back $275
Gaskets for $100

You might want to add a Turbine Technologies 2400 stall speed converter in there, too: They are only $160. I've got their address around here somewhere if you want it.
