eh, damn terd gen......wtf??

so im still putting my car frew its paces, latley its been runnin funny with the 4 bbl kicked in.......it used to pull great up top with 4bbl but now it just boggs

tonight i pulled onto the interstate in 1st, wound out 1st (5k) then shifted to 2nd....nice n smooth, but 2nd to 3rd was fuc ked up, i wound out 2nd at around 5k then shifted but the car bucked and jumped, pulled and let off, rpms went up n down by like 1k-1500 rpm...like it couldnt pick a gear or something.....(car is a4 btw)...at this point i put it in OD and let off

the car runs fine when its not at WOT, the car USED to pull nice and the 4 bbl opened fine

now something totaly dumb of me, maybe its related or not.......but there is a steel tube coming off my passanger side valve cover (EGR is on other cover)..... there is also an opening under my breather (cheapo edlebrock breather from autozone)........dont ask me how i missed these 2 things cuz i have no idere myself

idea's, comments or flaming welcomed

Re: eh, damn terd gen......wtf??

Could be a couple of things:

1. I'd suspect fuel starvation. You stated it only happens at WOT, and usually at a high RPM. Classic case of starvation, and unfortunately a common problem with carbed thirdgens. Removing the filter at the carb inlet and installing an inline filter may help, but usually the problem is remedied with a new fuel pump.

2. Could be a trans issue. The 700s are notorious for the 2-3 shift problems, and although common, I'd diagnose for a fuel problem first.

My advice would be to install a fuel pressure gauge and monitor it (outside the vehicle) while driving. Taping it to the windshield works best. If the pressure drops significantly OR to less than 2 psi, repair the fuel system.

I had a similar problem in my 84 Z28.I wasnt sure what it was at first either.I replaced the air filter and fuel filter(i'm supprised the car even ran the fuel filter was so dirty).I had just gotten the car on the road(a year after buying it so i knew there would be some problems)...Now the car doesnt like shifting from 3rd to 4th.Ah well something else to figure out.

I'd say try the fuel and air filters first...then go elsewhere(fuel pump or the other parts of fuel delivery)

Re: eh, damn terd gen......wtf??

well 2night i passed a dualy w/o problem....also got on the interstate and wound her out, 4 bbl opened fine

the shifted problem only occures that one time when i was shifting manually (while the 4bbl was acting up)

the guy that helped me with the motor swapped ghetto rigged the fuel system cuz he didnt wunna drop the tank, he LEFT the stock E fuel pump in the tank and let the mechanical pump pumps its heart out and draw fuel THROUGH the stock pump in the tank !!!!! (didnt tell me this untill after the swap was done)
