Duel fans question
Ok once again Im back for words of wisdom from my fellow 3rd gen owners. I really am thankful you all have responded to all my questions and yet here is another question.
Now, I want to make sure my duel fans are working the way they are suppose to. When I turn the key to acessory, or how ever you spell that, the passenger side fan comes on and when i start the car only the driver side fan comes on. Now I know the pass. side is set up on a temp switch but is it suppose to come on with the key in the acessory position? and also when the car heats up both the fans are on. Also isnt the pass. side fan suppose to come on even after you shut the car off and the temp rises? Well, I hope these questions arent too stupid. Im just wondering is all. Thanks again for you time and input

Re: Duel fans question
Primary fan (driver side) comes on at 223F or when you use air conditioning or defrost.
Secondary fan (passenger side) comes on at 235F or when the A/C head pressure hits (aprox) 232 psi. You can buy fan switches for the passenger cyclinder head that will turn it on/off lower (200/185F or 176/166F.....I run the 200/185 switch)
If the car is hot and you turn the key to RUN but don't actually start it. The secondary fan will run until the temperature gets low enough to turn it off. The driver side will not come on. With the key off neither fan will run.
If the car is cold and your driver side fan comes on when you start it, you probably have the A/C or the defroster on. (Seeing as you're in TX in August I'm guessing your A/C is on all the time.)
If you have a SES light or codes showing, they will sometimes turn a fan on.

Re: Duel fans question
Hey, since you aswered his question already rather then starting another thread i'm going to do some thread jacking on this topic.
My car is overheating when it's hot out and I drive around town in stop and go traffic. The passanger side fan comes on but not the drivers side. This could be the fan or the switch. Seeing how when I turn the A/C on I dont get it to come on then either its probably the fan, correct? I already have a 160 thrermostat. Is it expensive to replace the fans? Any other ideas how to keep my car cool in this hot *** weather? Thanks

Re: Duel fans question
Well assuming that the stock fan switch is still in your car, that means the fan will be on and off at (aprox) 235 and 230F. So at 230 and below you're relying only on your thermostat (which won't do much at slow city speeds).
Could be that the fan has gone out, but out of all the cooling issues that come up on these cars, the fans seem to rarely burn out (unless they're wired to be on all the time).
Check the relay for the driver's side fan. On my Trans Am, it's between the radiator cap and the rad. Passenger is between the evap can and 1/4 panel. (These may be in different spots on a Camaro) I know there is a way to apply a test voltage to these fans to check if the fans work or not, but I can't remember the exact way to do it. Do some searching on this board for it. There is also a cooling forum at Thirdgen.org with some good posts.

"My car is overheating when it's hot out and I drive around town in stop and go traffic."
Mine did the same thing and not having the time or money to fool around trying to find out why the secondary fan wouldn't turn on I grounded a wire at the fan relays so that both fans run whenever I turn the Ignition switch to the run position.
I've never had a problem since and July was really hot here, (between 95 and 105) nearly the whole month and the car kept it's cool.

Re: Duel fans question
Just to throw my question in on this thread real quik, is there an problems i should expect with putting a dual fan in on a car that wasnt made with one? I have an 84 z28 and i want to put a dual fan on it, should that be a problem or not
Re: Duel fans question
The only problem I could see is getting them to come on at seperate times like they do on the newer 3rd gens. Unless you just want them to both kick on at the same time then you shouldn't have much of an issue.
