Dual mufflers on 3rd gen
Dual mufflers on 3rd gen
I heard having dual muffler exhaust can be done on a third gen, but a muffler shop owner told me its impossible. Anyone with a diagram or instructions to prove its possible please ?
Re: Dual mufflers on 3rd gen
I have true dual 3" exhaust on my car. I don't have problems with the exhasut scraping, but the headers are the low point and those do occasionaly scrape in really bad spots.

It's not possible from a commercial shops perspective because you've got a single catalytic converter and they won't want to take the time to fabricate a configuration to use two cats, and they definitely won't remove the cat for fear of getting fined. When you get past the cat issue, then there's the space issue. You can get two cats under the floor (GM did it) but then you'll need a heat shield (to do it properly), then you've got clearance... There isn't much extra room around a single 3" exhaust pipe down the transmission/driveshaft tunnel, to get two pipes in there you're either going to a) lose ground clearance, or b) have to use small diameter pipes. You'll have the same problem going over the axle in the rear. You have to go over the axle since in most places its illegal to have the exhaust exit in front of the rear tires. Fitting two mufflers under the rear end, then tailpipes is another headache. Then you've got the theory that a single 3" pipe flows better than two 2.25" pipes.
So where does that leave you? Just get a hi-flow cat and a good 3" catback and save yourself the headaches. It's quick, easy, less expensive and will perform as well or better then true dual exhaust. These cars have been around for 24 years, if dual exhaust really made a marketable improvement Flowmaster, Dynomax, Borla, etc would offer a kit.
You could always do the Universal El Camino true dual system... 40ft of flexible exhaust tubing, a bunch of clamps and some glasspacks.

theyre right, true duals tough, even the ones you see everyone admits to having clearance problems which sucks.also the one exits right under the rear floor which im not sure you really want to do either.
if your only running a mild engine set up a good 3 inch cat back with a high flow cat all you need.make sure its 3 inch all way back, some have 2 1/2 intermediate pipes which kinda kills your 3 inch cat no?
also if your really die hard and have a big motor and 660 bucks, theres a 4 inch cat back set up or even a 3 1/2 cat back set up for sale which should suffice for most street rides.
the only duals ive seen the guy went as far as cutting his rear seat floor out, boxing the flor to fit the mufflers up in there nice and high off the ground, kinda like the way old cars do it.with a 3rd or 4 thgen, the problem you have with duals is if you want rear exit, getting 2 piipes over the axle and panhard bar tough, almost if not impossible.
i didnt se eone real nice custom exhaust,i think maybe on 3rd gen .com,it was true duals all the way bcak with 2 smaller mufflers side by side in the same spot as the stock mufflers are,but he paid a lot for it and i think it was smaller pipes.in that case id save the cash and buy the 4inch set up

Re: Dual mufflers on 3rd gen
no emissions for me so no cats and i can get around the state visual inspection. my duals were $195 installed. i was kinda lucky with that price. the only low clearance i have with them is where it goes under the crossmember. i have yet to scrape anything with them. the only thing is that i can never lower my car much. i have a pretty built up motor so 3" was a good choice for me. most people go w/ 2.5" pipe which is suffiecent with most builds. only problem i have is when i throw a fireball out the back and with it being under my car its quite a loud pop and i feel it. its loud at times. but i fell in love with it. i love my duals.
