drivetrain value

what are the values for todays thirdgen drivetrain? most people rarely ever search out to put a 305tbi. just curious what the various drivetrains are worth these days or maybe if someone had to recently replace one in the last few years and might now what it cost them.

i know back when i did my lsx conversion i sold my l98 for $700. i wish i would have kept it for that.

$700 is about right for an L98 with expected mileage. 305tbi would probably fetch less than $500 depending on mileage.

so basically they aren't worth much at all then? sounds like the hardware like the actual harness, ecm, clusters, etc are worth more then the engines they monitor.

thanks for the input!

I got $500 for my 305 H.O. and felt lucky at that.

With all the aftermarket stuff out there now, it's really hard to sell off a sixteen year old, used drivetrain for much of anything. Shipping costs totally restrict you to selling in your local market.

i would agree... this is also why it's hard to argue the value of a car. especially if the car has high mileage and the body needs work. if the motor is worthless even in good running condition and a car needs some body repair the value just isn't there.

i just went to look at a black 91 z28 305. the car had 170k. body needed work, floor boards were starting to rust through and the engine/trans was beat. guy wanted $4k because it was a z28..

everything is only worth what someone will pay i guess. i was just interested to see what others thought about the overall value of various drivetrains. i think the only time it comes into play with these cars is if the car is a very very low mileage car. 10k miles or lower. 100k is not a low mileage car.

Something I've noticed is that the price of these cars has doubled and tripled over the past 6 years or so. In 2002 when I came back stateside from Portugal, I was looking for a car. I had previously owned a 1995 V6 Camarothat got me into F-bodies so I was looking for a Z28. I priced about 20 91-91 Z28's and the most expensive one I saw on autotrader was $2k (in MINT condition). Most were in OK shape and sold for around $800. I ended up getting a 1998 Z28 that I got rid of last March and started looking for something cheaper. The cheapest third gen I could find on autotrader was $1500 and it didn't run and had 4 different color body panels on it! The average cost for a running, decent looking 3rd gen last March was $2k or higher. Take this ad:

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...ag=1&cardist=5

That car would have been a $500 car in 2002. I ended up buying my 1991 Z for $500, but I bought it from a guy who had it for sale for $1500. His GF left him and he needed the $500 that day or he was getting evicted, so even the car that I bought was in the $1500 range and it needed a new interior and a couple of dings pulled out.I started calling around to junk yards and all of the local ones are sold out of 3rd gen parts. Maybe they're getting rarer? I don't know the reason, but I do know the demand for third gens are going up.

southern cars do seem to go for twice what they go for up here.

i've been watching them for the last ten years and i've never seen a respectable 91-92 z28 go for anything ever under 2k. you should have bought them all up as a beat up junk version goes for more then that now.

parts wise however the drivetrains... except for the 350tpi just aren't worth anything at all. which means that a rusted car that needs body work isn't worth anything over $500 running or not.
