driveshaft question

driveshaft question

will an aluminum driveshaft from an 4th gen fit in a 3rd gen. a guy is selling one on ebay for pretty cheap.

yes, driveshafts from 85-02 are interchangable, 82-84 also if it has a 700r4 or t-5

is the aluminum drive shaft a stock option? or are they aftermarket add ons?

In the 3rd gens you could only get an aluminum driveshaft stock if you ordered the 1LE option. They're stock in all LS1 and many LT1 4th gens though, and they are a direct bolt in. You can also get them aftermarket from Lingenfelter...but they're pricey.

I know of 3 all stock 3rd gens with aluminum shafts and not one is 1LE.

The aluminum driveshaft was rpo JG1 and was put on many G92 third gens

OK so it was G92 not 1LE.....sorry I'm not as current on RPO's as I am on general mechanical knowledge.

Both G92 & 1LE f-bodys had aluminium dr.shafts.I believe it was standard on 1LEs only,optional for all others though.My 84z has one from a 88 T/A.Works w/both 9/10 bolt rearends.Even 700r/T5.

The TSB that allowed replacement of the stock steel shaft in LT1 F-Bodies was the 1LE aluminum from a 3rd gen.

LS1 cars got aluminum standard.

I just put an aluminum driveshaft in my third gen and it was real easy. I put up a post in drivetrain and someone recomended that i just take it to the local machine shop and have them press in new heavy-duty u joints. That was the best way to go.
