There's an engine for sale now on ebay but it uses a hydraulic flat tappet cam.. should I go for it?

Sure they do, thats what most people with small blocks run. Solid, and roller cams enable you to run higher numbers (lift etc) But hydralic cams, are much less matenence. A solid lift cam you have to adjust regularly.

Edit: If you buy that engine though, dont use the TBI its built for. Unless your putting it in a truck or something.

Just cause you could make alot more power with another intake system. But I do have to give it to TBI motors they last forever

I'd rather have a roller camp. This is so i can have higher lifts without the duration if I so choose.

No way is that cam going to make those power numbers with stock heads and a TBI unit - just ain't gonna happen. You can do better for less $. The roller has a few small benefits over the roller cam setup. But IMO the small HP gain you will see is not worth the high inital cost. The money you save in the valvetrain can be put elsewhere with greater rewards.

That engine would probably get you into the low 15s high 14s with the rest of the drive train stock. For the price, just go to a local machine shop and get one built, or DIY for even less.

Check with GM (local dealership parts dept should be able to hook you up), the 330 HP HO engine w/Vortec heads runs about what they're asking for that engine.

12486041 330HP / 350 GM Performance Parts Crate Engine Assembly $2,299.90

That was at:
http://www.sdpc2000.com/cart.asp?act...id=120&pid=115

If you go stock you can get a complete Goodwrench engine for under $2k and long blocks for a little over $1k. Then you also have a warranty backed by GM.

Notice the saw tooth design on the front of the heads and the fact that they use center bolt valve covers... They are vortec cylinder heads on the motor. They may be stock, but they flow as well, if not better than the majority of aftermarket cylinder heads being produced currently. In fact, I believe that is a copy cat of the 350HO engine but with a vortec TBI intake on it. I believe the 300 horsepower rating has been given to it to account for a 30 horsepower loss due to having a TBI induction bolted on top of it. That motor with a carb setup is available from www.sdpc2000.com for $2200. That exact motor (350HO, demon carb, edelbrock intake) propelled my Camaro to 12.8's and 12.9's at 106mph.

How much money does it take for a thirdgen to get into the 12's using a crate motor with a carb? How's the drivability and gas mileage? Does anybody have RWHP numbers?

I spent $400 on an 82 Camaro, 2000 on the 350HO crate engine rated at 330hp/380ft lbs, $100 on a turbo 350 and $100 for the swap kit, $260 for a 3000 stall converter, $100 for an SLP posi and $180 for a Richmond 3.73 ring and pinion set, $150 on a vortec performer intake and $300 on a used Demon 650 carb. Thats all the big stuff anyway, and it put me at high 12's.
