Do convertibles loose power?

If so, is it a lot. my friend told me not to get a convertible because they loose out on a lot of power.

He may be partially correct. ASC (who performed the convertible conversion for GM) did not perform the conversion on any 350 cars. All "factory" built thirdgen converts were 305s. And to add insult to injury, most of those 305s were automatics with the small "peanut" cam... thus making no power.

they arnt even heavier.

sure they have a stamped steel U channel pop rivited to the bottom, but the sheer weight of the hatch glass on the coupes more then made up for it.

they weigh about the same. the diff being that the coupe has more weight over the back because of the glass, while the vert has a more forward bias.

as far as power goes, the engine and the trans are the same as the coupes with that engine trans combo.... you couldnt get the 350 in there, but the 305TPI coupe vs the 305TPI vert have the same power output... same goes for the TBI cars.

if you compare a convertible to a coupe, whether they're both base models or both z28's, the convertible will generally be at least 100 pounds heavier, which would in turn make you slower in the 1/4 mile.....but only by about 1/10 of a second.

then explain how my car weighed 15lbs less then a hardtop with the same options.

what weighs 100lbs thats on the vert and not on the coupe? the trunk decklid, under trunk bracing, and ragtop weigh less then the roof and coupe hatch.

and the only thing remaining is the vert bracing undernieth. i hardly can see it weighing more.... but alas... rumors always outnumber the truth. historiclly, yes, verts weigh more because of bracing... is that true for 3rdgens? go weigh them and you tell me.

yeah i get to prove that convert's do weigh more. here is the list straight from TGO(thirdgen.org) for any non believers, as you can see a convert. does weigh more

Model Shipping Weight Curb Weight
Camaro Coupe 3025 3105
Convertible 3142 3220
Z28 Coupe 3194 3273
Convertible 3298 3377

in a coupe, 115 lbs mroe and in a z28 103 lbs more. these are for 92 camaros. so to answer the exact question no they dont "lose power" but they are heavier and liek stated above didn't get the best engines available thus making them underpowered.

well if you look at the numbers and your car was a base model convert. and the hardtop was a z28 then you would be correct...

except his was also a L03 auto RS with leather seats, AC, factory CD, cruise, ect... it was a teal hardtop version of mine. i suppose i could list my RPOs and dig up his... but i cant get on TGO right now, and id have to do a search to find his...

btw, is TGO down, or is it just me?

well i've been on TGO for around 3-4 years now and i agree if you listen to everything you are screwed... but that goes for every other site too, there are always people with bs info and who dont know what they are talking about, that's why there are more than 2 people answering posts

and i am not having any trouble with it.
