Distributer Gear

So I'm getting my motor rebuilt and noticed my distributer gear is worn.

So now I have two options. Either the Bronze gear or the new composite gear from Comp Cams.

The car is a daily driver but it only sees the road maybe 3 days out of the year... Maybe 5-10,000 km's a year.

Heres the link on the two gears I have to choose from. Price difference is about $100.

Re: Distributer Gear

"Bronze" gears are usaully only used with "steel"cams, b/c an iron gear will destroy the teeth on the cam. An cast iron gear should be used on stock type iron cams. You want the wear on the cheap to replace distributor gear not the expensive cam.

Re: Distributer Gear

If your rebuilding the engine, why are you not putting in a better ignition and a new distributor? Just wondering. My engine had 200k on it, and the distributor was BEYOND needing a new one, lol.

Re: Distributer Gear

It is a new distributor. I bought a MSD Billet Aluminum piece. They come with a cast iron gear though and I totally overlooked the fact that the cam gear wouldn't mate right with the distributor gear. Thats why its worn out in less than 1000 km's.

Motor was finished last year but I had some cylinder wall glazing and burning oil problems so its getting a refresh right now.

Can't say about the wear of the composite, never used one, but I like the Bronze, I've had good luck with them in the past.

Re: Distributer Gear

I was also interested in in that composite comp distributor gear, I called about it and they told me you couldn't use it in a engine w/ normal oiling system. I don't know why, but I guess I will be running a bronze gear after all.
