could someone explain...

okay ive always loved cars but have never really been exposed to them. I know a fair bit about cars just in terms of basically what everything does but not much more. Im buying a third gen camaro (hopefully 87-89) soon and i hear people talking about 9 bolt and 10 bolt rears....everyone seems to agree that the 9 is better and stronger but i honestly dont understand why....if someone wouldnt mind taking a sec and explaining the diffrences and why ones better then the other it would be much appreciated

the 9 bolt uses what's called spider gears kind of like the gears in a transmission and by having that it's gonna give it alot more extra strength, the 10 bolt rear ends use the regular ring and pinion like you see in jegs summit etc, i have heard the the 10 bolt's can only hold up to about 400 hp before they will break on ya, and i read on www.9bolt.com (they have an article about the 9 bolt out of hotrod magazine) that the 9 bolt's are stronger that dana 44 rear end's, im not sure if your familiar with the dana 44 but that's a real popular rear end that people put in lifted 4x4 truck's and you know those rear end's have to be strong! hope that was some help to you!

More mis-infomation then fact (10-bolt uses a regular ring & pinion gear) about the 9-Bolt. Both use a ring and pinion . The main difference is in the internal diff parts and the way the axle shafts are retained, this is the short version. Do a search on thirdgen.org
for all you will need to know about the difference between the 9 & 10 Bolt rears. or the only useful info www.9bolt.com.
