I have a stock 305 lg4 86 ta. I'm about to jerk the 305 and put in a 383. My questions is, will there be any cooling issues with the stock fan? The 305 always ran at about 200 on the open road and about 220 at idle. This was also after a 160 thermostat.

wtf? you car runs at 200 on the open road and thats with the 160 thermostat? O_o thats pretty crazy. My car on the open road runs at around 160 and whats with the fan off. Then in traffic or at idle it runs at about 180. I think your thermostat, water pump, or even just your radiator cap is bad. My car used to run at around 200+ also but I found my radiator cap was bad. Changed it and the temps dropped down to around 180 or less. You should check on those parts.
You need to change the fan switch to an aftermarket piece. You could also disconnect the A/C at the pump and turn the air controls to defrost. That should turn the fan on all the time the cheap way.

It is a sensor that screws into the side of a heads. You should be able to get one from any performance parts dealer. Check out the summit or jegs catalog. I'm don't think it would cost more than $80.00 .

I have an 86 w/305 TPI and only a single fan. Down the road it hits maybe 180. At idle it does go up to 220 but the fan kicks on. The thing with the switch. If you are cheap like me you can buy a generic toggle switch and mount it under the dash. I put mine in the Diag. Check housing. You will have to run a wire(ground) to the ground after the fan relay switch. If I see my temp. going up I hit the fan. I also don't have a/c. Good luck and don't pay the $80 you can use that elsewhere. Later Ryan
Two things to avoid; 1= Don't run too much timing advance, 2= don't run lean, these will help a lot.
Some fixes are;
1)...low temp fan switch, which I believe screws in the front of the intake or block somewhere. It'll turn the fans on at about 195* and off around 180*.
2)...160* t-stat, which will allow water to circulate to the radiator sooner and slow it from taking on so much heat.
3)...the "over-looked"Radiator-cap, failure to pressurize will let it boil at a lower temperature.
