Converting TBI to TPI

Is it possible to swap a TBI off a '92 RS and put a TPI setup from a '87 Iroc on???? If so, what parts do I need? And will I have to convert anything since the TPI is mass air flow and my RS is speed density??

You will need the sensors, ECM and harness to start with. How is your RS Mass Air? TBI is not mass air.

You'll also need a new fuel pump. TPI runs around 45 PSI while a TBI runs around 15 PSI. If you're going to run the 87 ECM, don't worry about converting it to speed density.

Aklim, I was saying that the '87 was mass-air and my '92 is Speed density.....

97 WS6, so as long as I run the '87 ECM I don't have to convert anything???? and the '87 has everything my '92 has?????

Regarding the 1992 being SD: I was almost 100% sure only TPI cars were referred to as SD and MAF.

Regarding the TBI-->TPI Swap: Just get the engine, harness, ecm, and fuel pump. Swap them all out. Hardest part will be the harness.

I am not sure about the guages but I would think the rest should not be too difficult.

I don't know exactly how hard it will be, but a pain and very time consuming. I'd get a roll of masking tape or something so you can mark where EVERY connector went, then lay the new harness out in the same pattern. A wiring diagram will help a lot, you'll need one for your 92 and the 87 though.

Coery's got it right. As long as you mark what each harness connector goes to when you take the harness out of the '87, it'll go back in fairly easily. It'll be a bit of a pain getting the old one out of all those clips and the new one in place behind the dash, but it shouldn't be THAT bad.

The gauges "should" be fine as long as they have the same range speedo (i.e. 115 vs 145mph.)

You'll probably need to get someone to tweak the computer a bit for differences in gearing. Also, I'm not sure on this, but I believe 87 Camaros used a mechanical speedo while your 92 uses a VSS instead. I'm not sure how that will affect your swap.

Regarding the 1992 being SD: I was almost 100% sure only TPI cars were referred to as SD and MAF.
Actually, the cars that were controlled primarily by the MAF also used a MAP (the major sensor in a SD setup). This makes the cars much easier to modify and program and also allows them to adapt to changes in weather and temperature easier. 91-92 TPI cars and the 93 LT1 were SD cars. GM switched back to using the MAF setup in 94 and has continued to use this setup ever since.
