Converting my '84 to EFI: Need a fuel tank?
I just picked up a 60 PSI, 190 lph Walbro turbine in-tank fuel pump and I need to know if it'll bolt into my existing 1984 fuel tank. Will it, or do I need to replace the tank with a newer third-gen tank such as a 1986-1992 design?
Please email me if you have DIRECT experience. I dont need guesses.
Thanks,
Daniel Burk

Hey Daniel, long time no see.
Yes, the '84 fuel tank will accept an in-tank fuel pump assembly. I an currently in the final stages of converting my L69 to SD TPI. This was one of my concerns, but no problem at all. Are you going TPI or aftermarket FI? If TPI, besure you have the fuel line attachments (rubber hoses). I got mine from an '85 Z28, they are the same from '85-'92. Let me know if I can be of more assistance.

When I converted from carb to TPI, I chose to use a Holley 255lph external in-line fuel pump. Didn't have to mess with the fuel tank and I can change my fuel pump in a matter of minutes.
I plan on having a spare pump in my car , just in case.

Good to hear from you, George!
Yes, I'm still around, just a little less often, it seems. I'm pretty patient and even though it's taken me eight years to get where I am on this project, I'm still sticking to it.
I'm also converting to a speed-density multiport fuel injection system - It's a #730 ECM running on a converted 165 ECM wiring harness, and a nitrous-ready TPIS Miniram that I bought from Andrew Gunnesch who bought it from Curt Martin. It is truly an amazing internet mailing list piece with lots of history.
Thanks for doing the research on the in-tank fuel pump for me, I'll probably pop the fuel pump in over Christmas, then run all-new steel fuel and brake lines. 3/8 stainless tubing with a nice, big fuel filter is in order, considering the fact that I'll be making approximately 600 to 625 BHP when on the nitrous. I already have 12 feet of Earl's braided stainless fuel line and some of the -AN fittings. I also have a TPI fuel rail with -AN adapter fittings, but I wont be using that. By the way, this pump is a Walbro pump for the 2004 Z06 Corvette. I couldnt afford my 'vette, so I decided to get it one piece at a time!
