Code 54 on 87 2.8 V6

looked up the code and said something about low fuel pump circut voltage. what would cause that?

checked the EGR valve and the 1/2" thick tube going from the valve to the plenum and it looked pretty good, even for having a bunch of miles on it.

thanks for any input

Re: Code 54 on 87 2.8 V6

This is what I get from my Haynes manual:

Code 54: Fuel pump circuit- Defective fuel pump; defective fuel pump relay; defective oil pressure switch; poor electrical connection, open or short in circuit; defective ECM

Have you checked recently, or can you check the fuel pressure? Do you hear the fuel pump whine when you turn the key to ACC (accessories)? I'd check the fuel pressure and check for loose or disconnected wiring to under the hood and check the relay.

i havent yet,but when my buddy (its his car) comes over 2day im gonna check the fuel pressure w/ my gauge.

the car runs so ****ty,i couldnt tell if it was timing or it wasnt getting gas last night while i was riding in it,but i did say something to him last night about wanted to check the fuel pressure 2day.

im also gonna check to see if the fuel filter has ever been replaced b/c this thing has almost 200K on it i think.

thanks for the reply man

How long has it been since the car's had a tune-up? I wouldn't be surprised if it's been a while. That could be causing some of the problems, too.

Re: Code 54 on 87 2.8 V6

he wasnt able to come by,so i couldnt check the fuel pressure.

he put plugs and wires on the car a couple years ago,and i pulled the plugs and they look good. i believe he put a cap and rotor on it at the same time as well. and DAMN these things are a PITA to get to the distributor on this thing...its easier on my IROC.

does this thing have a wire that comes from the computer to advance/retard the timing i need to take off to set base timing?

thanks for the help

I believe they do. It should be on the passenger side, in between the heater box and the strut tower cap somewhere, but you probably already knew that .
