Choke light always on

My choke light on my 87 camaro LT 305 carb. is always on. Also when i start it i gotta hold the gas and when i put it in gear(its automatic) it seems to lessen in rpm i think(no tach as of yet), but i can hear it. When i hit the gas seems to sputter and it will stall. It will keep doing that until it takes off and then it wouldnt really stall anymore, but a few instances it did.

ALWAYS on? Or just when your starting her up and in park? When you start it you have to hold the gas? It's a carb so your going to have to keep your foot on it for a little while before it can idle fine...

It actually almost seems normal except for the sputtering and stalling but you might need to take more time warming up...may be time for a tune up on the carb, is there any smoke? need some more info

when i said always on i meant always on, like all the time. drive anywhere its on, parked somewhere its on. only time its ever off is when car is off. i think the electric choke is on the fritz. i know the car gotta warm up but i think takes too long. the car just got a complete tuneup just after i bought it a couple of weeks ago, i just didnt do anything to the carb. im gonna do some checking up here and there saturday. gonna put my new fender in and probably a new o2 sensor if it got 1. maybe get my tips also. think i might check the fuel filter also and if needed buy a new one. also gotta fix the beep noise that stays on when the gauge lights are on, but its only when my foot aint on the brake so i think its a wire next to the brake. so i just keep the gauge lights off sux at night. work here and there all over my car. i got it for $500. so of course needs work. and for smoke aint really much of it and the only smoke was from the engine restorer, but thats getting less and less as it workin its way.

Could be either the choke itself, the heated coil is fried, the wiring, or the relay.
My 85, El, fried all three. I believe the relay is what trips the light. So I check it first.

Just to make things more confusing...

The choke light will also indicate a low voltage condition. Is your car charging properly?

Have you at least checked to see if the choke was connected? Is there power at the wire on cold start?
