Question Cat Converters

ok, im still new to the whole car tech thing... and im just tryin to find a few things out. Do cat converters come on all cars? ( i just bought a 92 camaro rs ) and i know some people that have taken the cats of their cars, what is the real reason for doing this?... is it really worth it? how much hp is usally gained? The real only thing i know about them is they have to do with emmisions regulation. I live in Michigan though and dont have to pass smog tests..
thanx for info in advance

Catalytic converters have come on most passenger cars since the 70's. I'm not sure of the exact year. The bad press about them comes from the crappy designs and flow specs on the 70's models. They really were crappy and restricted performance more than it already was. However, today's cats are pretty damn good, and do very little, if anything, to hinder performance. It comes down to a personal preference. If your cat is working fine, why spend the money and go to the hassle of changing or removing it? If its clogged or bad, then you can either replace it with a new "high-flow" version (I recommend Car Sound), or you can gut the cat, or remove it and replace the section with a piece of exhaust pipe. Keep in mind however, removing a working cat is a federal offense punishable by a fine and/or jail time if you get caught.

Hey; welcome to the board.

If you're new to the modding world and working on a 3rd-gen, most people will highly recommend working on the suspension first, as do I. Subframe connectors, strut tower brace, struts, springs, control arms, shocks, torque arm, and tires are great places to start learning your car, and will be a huge benefit to a car that is approaching 10-20 years old. After that, you can go after the exhaust system, intake, driveline, fuel system, and engine.
Good luck!

Thumbs up

cool, thanks a lot. But why would you choose suspension first? im sure it does help to replace some of the older parts the tend to wear more, but you wouldnt go for something like intake first? ok i have a K&N filter on my camaro but the box around it is realtively small and the air intake tube is even smaller. if i take the box totaly off will it preform much better if i instaled a cowl hood? not to mention that the hoods just look sweet.
