Car wont start when hot!!! Need help!

Hey guys, I got a serious problem with my '88 lately. Ever since I built the motor, car was hard to start after driving it for a bit. It has high compression, so I understand (stock but new '88 305 starter). Lately, the problem is WAY worse. Its a bitch to start whenever I drive it for a bit. No matter what timing its set at or anything. Before, you could retard the timing a bit and it would start easier. Now, no more. I have a newer bosch starter sitting in my garage from a '87 Buick Regal 305 (also 153 tooth flywheel), so I can try that one. But I don't know how much help its going to be. I might try and get a starter blanket, that might help too.

What abour reduction starters for a SBC for a 153 tooth flywheel? Who makes them and how much? Do they work well or just a little better then stock? Thanks.

Starter heat soak problems are almost standard for SBC's, and when you get into high compression and headers and such it gets worse. I picked up a GM High Performance gear reduction starter used for $80 and can't believe the difference it made. Engine starts 50 times better and I don't have problems when she's hot either. They come drilled for both size flywheels, but only work with straight-pattern starter bolts. You also get the added bonuses of better header clearance, and less weight. Picking up a heat shield to go with it is a good idea too.
